Sorry if this is a stupid question.
How much are you meant to drink from the chalice?

A small sip will suffice. The mere fact that your are receiving His Blood, no matter how much, is enough. I wouldn’t take more than a small sip, or else you risk running the chalice dry too early, or spilling the Precious Blood.

Is there a risk of getting infection? Can disease, like TB or SARS, be tranferred from a carrier (person) to another person by licking/touching with our lips the same spot on the chalice?

I believe that’s up to speculation. Personally, I don’t think that Our Lord would allow us to get sick from drinking His Blood.

The Buffalo diocese has temporarily halted the distribution of wine and physical contact during the “sign of peace.” The Brooklyn diocese also has suspended wine distribution at Mass.

Yes. (With the caveat that for some, though not all, diseases, the risk is relatively small because some viruses die quickly when on the surface of the cup rather than on or in a human. Alcohol in wine also has some germicidal effect.) If this bothers you, you can skip drinking from the chalice.

Most of the parishes in my area aren’t offering the Precious Blood right now due to concerns about the virulent flu.

In my experience - no. And I have drank after elder sick people and have kissed publicly displayed icons and relics. I never got sick even if it happened during wintertime. When I was 5 my grandma took me to my first confession and communion before I begin school. My mom was not pleased with this since first of all it was not hygienic. It was however the first winter I did not even get a flu that I used to catch easily when little because I was picky about food and thus very thin.

Even a couple of drops is fine. If you are one of the last receiving the precious blood and there is a lot left it is OK to drink a “bit more”. Especially if there is a higher level of alcohol in the vine used for Holy Communion and if you know that the priest or deacon purifying the chalice is driving. Once I have seen that the chalice has been brought to a non driving communicant to help finish the precious blood. It is more likely that the last communicants will only receive the Body of Christ.

The doctors in a neighbouring parish say that it is more likely to catch viruses and bacteria when travelling on the underground than drinking from the chalice (which is wiped and turned some degrees before the next communicant). The cloths are washed before they are used again.

Most churches don’t provide a chalice per person, so you’ll need to share.

Taking the chalice isn’t at all necessary anyway, so if you dont want others’ germs just don’t take it. I don’t

This thread had to make me laugh a bit. Though I don’t suggest observation, I was sitting in the front pew and some 10 year old kid came up to the Extraordinary minister, took the cup and it looked to me like he drank half the cup. 😮

Never seen that before.

Well the reason I ask is that I’ve only taken the chalice once and that was when I was a kid. I didn’t know how much to drink but I thought the bible and the Mass said “drink” not “sip”. (Consecration prayer didn’t say take this all of you and sip from it) When it was my turn there wasn’t very much left I assure you. I took a small drink, seriously it wasnt very much (I mean I don’t even like wine). But I got a dirty look from the extraordinary minister. I thought at the time I really took the smallest volume possible but obviously it wasn’t small enough. I think I was scarred from that point on so I haven’t taken Chalice ever since.

It’s customary to take a very small amount of the precious blood. There should ideally be enough for everyone at mass, if possible. So yes, that would equate to a “sip”. Or a “taste”.
