What are your thoughts of underaged drinking to become buzzed, relaxed and 'meet people? Is not being buzzed simply a lower level of intoxication of being drunk? I understand that underage drinking is breaking Caesers laws, not gods particularly. Yet, would you call drinking something that tastes not that great in order to become buzzed a ‘wrong use’ of alcohol that is simply trying to cover the truth of your anxiety of meeting new people? I would, what are your thoughts?

You shouldn’t need alcohol to meet new people. While it can, if used responsibly, be a great venue meet and have social interaction for certain events, any who person thinks they need it in order meet new people, can seriously use some help. To sum it up, drinking something that doesn’t taste good in order to cover up the anxiety of meeting new people is a wrong use of alcohol.

From what I understand, unless a law is unjust (such as one requiring you to kill people or to not be catholic) you should obey it. Therefore, underage drinking would be wrong even if it wasn’t a misuse of alchohol.

Drinking alcohol at a young age is number 1 , physically bad for you; number 2 can easily get you into trouble…ie…DWI, teen pregnancy, putting yourself in a position where you could get raped or assaulted…alcohol can be addicting and can ruin not only the drinkers life but all the people around the drinker…Don’t drink…it is bad for anyone…

Alcohol is a depressant. Doesn’t it seem counterintuitive to use a depressant in order to ‘stimulate yourself’ into meeting and interacting with people?

It also loosens your inhibitions. You know, most inhibitions we get we get for good reasons. We are using prudential judgment. Lose the ‘inhibition’ and you often lose the ‘civility’ expressed toward others. Not really a good way to meet others if in meeting them you are so ‘relaxed’ that you become offensive. . .and most people do, getting loud, tangential, falsely ‘touchy’, or worse, surly, argumentative, hypercritical. . .

The funny thing is that very often once a person is ‘of age’, they suddenly find themselves wanting to drink little, if at all, especially if some alcohol does not taste ‘good’ to them. Isn’t it a waste to chug down 2-3 beers (while secretly finding them unpalatable) because one falsely thinks, “this will make me relaxed and more fun to be around.”

Instead, one could find ways of actually being more relaxed without the use of drugs and other chemicals --anything from simply getting more used to social situations by becoming involved in more groups and getting used to seeing people in social situations, to use of things like role-playing, relaxation by picturing oneself in a ‘happy place’, etc. And of course, yet another plus to this is that one needn’t worry about being picked up for underage drinking, having to go to a police station, being processed for possession, having to explain to mom and dad, or school officials, or the boss. . .having to attend alcohol counseling, etc. etc.

The way I understand it, drinking becomes a sin when it begins to effect one’s reasoning ability.

Every evening, I have a glass of wine to relax and unwind. Sometimes I do get a little “buzzed,” but never enough so my inhibitions are let down. I don’t have my wine to relax and meet people, and I don’t get drunk. However I went out with my brothers the other night, and my one brother kept refilling my glass! What do I do in that situation? I don’t want to waste. 🤷

😃

If it is not good for you to drink anymore, by leaving the glass full it would be the brothers who are wasteful by continuing to pour more wine into your already full cup and spilling over. I’m guessing that they would not pour anymore in if the cup is full and someone has to pay. 😛

Intoxication or drunkeness is defined as lacking the faculty of reason which leads to bad and awkward behavior. Feeling a little bit buzzed but still have the faculty of reason is fine. However, underaged drinking is clearly breaking both Caesars laws and God’s laws. Since there is nothing in God’s laws that prevents Caesar from prohibiting it to minors for legitimate health concerns, then it becomes part of God’s moral law. As St. Paul teaches in Romans, God has given the princes some level of authority which we must follow. Whenever the government enacts a law that does not violate God’s moral law, then we must follow it.
**"1 Let every soul be subject to higher powers: for there is no power but from God: and those that are, are ordained of God. 2 Therefore he that resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God. And they that resist, purchase to themselves damnation. 3 For princes are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good: and thou shalt have praise from the same. 4 For he is God’s minister to thee, for good. But if thou do that which is evil, fear: for he beareth not the sword in vain. For he is God’s minister: an avenger to execute wrath upon him that doth evil. 5 Wherefore be subject of necessity, not only for wrath, but also for conscience’ sake. 6 For therefore also you pay tribute. For they are the ministers of God, serving unto this purpose. 7 Render therefore to all men their dues. Tribute, to whom tribute is due: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom fear: honour, to whom honour." (Romans 13:1-7 [DRB])

I’m not sure the details, but always have a back up plan. If you know you will be in a situation to drink too much, have boundaries and make it known. As well as having a backup plan so that someone will care for you if in fact you did drink too much. This sounds like a birthday celebration or some other one-time event. Most would not scruple over this. My only personal thoughts is that I always have more fun if I’m actually active to participate. (Sleeping is fun too, but I can be very mentally awake there as well to enjoy it.)

I could not agree with you any more

Ahhh, the voice of reason. Thank you very much. 👍

Underage drinking is wrong in itself, so that already puts this in the sinful category. However I will take it one step further and say that drinking in order to get buzzed no matter your age is sinful to a degree, or at the very least should be avoided. Besides, if you need to feel a buzz just to meet people, then you have a personal problem that needs to be fixed, and you can’t fix it until you admit that to yourself and try to work on it, which would include not drinking.

Drinking to become buzzed is just as sinful as drinking to become drunk. Why? Being buzzed is just a lower level of being drunk.

=)

What I stated is a precaution and a backup plan. One that most of us may need if we do go out with the “brothers”. This is in no way a support of “drinking too much” which is a sin in several ways: disobeying pastoral teachings from the ordinary magisterium, breaking the law thereby the civil authorities when they are just, and obstructing ones reason and logic which is a sin in itself.

This may be the case with being buzzed as well; however, I do not have experience to participate on this. I have seen drunk people and I have seen sober. But those that claim to be buzzed, I only see either nothing or drunkenness. I have never to my knowledge been drunk or buzzed – this may have to do with the fact that I am not interested in alcohol as a beverage.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with “loosening up” a bit with a drink or two once in a while provided you are of legal age. Lawbreaking is never a good idea but it happens. If you are underage and drinking it’s best that you stop. If you insist on drinking anyway, be smart about it. Do not drink and drive. Do not get in the car when the driver has been drinking. Do not drink to excess. Do not let your friends drink to excess. Do not drink every weekend.

I say all of this because the reality is that kids drink whether they are of age or not. Using alcohol as a crutch is dangerous. Develop your social skills when totally sober. The key word in all of this is “moderation” and “common sense”.

One more thing. If you insist on breaking “Cesar’s” laws… Cesar might lock you up! Your best option is to wait until legal age and then practice moderation. To be DRUNK at any age is… stupid!

😉

**Psalm 104 “14 for cattle you make the grass grow, and for people the plants they need, to bring forth food from the earth,
15 and wine to cheer people’s hearts, oil to make their faces glow, food to make them sturdy of heart.”

Sounds to me like ‘buzz’ words.:hypno::hypno:**
