well if I already knew it, why would I have asked? But I see your points. I guess I’ll just be waiting another 8-9 months before I can hang with these guys then.
That’s too bad, that they won’t stay non-alcoholic while hanging out with you for just 9 months. I hope alcohol isn’t that central to their lives so young. It will likely only be more so when they’re 30 if so.

hey all, is it sinful for a 21 year old to drink beers (not to intoxication) with his 20 year old friends? I’m not providing them and the reality of the situation is they will drink whether I’m with them or not, so is it wrong to be there?
While it is perfectly lawful for a Christian to consume a moderate amount of alcohol, it is against the laws of our country for minors to do so. It will be assumed (legally speaking) that if you are the adult present, you were the one that supplied them. This would be an accusation of sinful behavior. We are to avoid the appearance of sin, so that our testimony will not be tarnished. Although it is your right to consume alcohol, it is your responsibility to respect the laws of the land. We are to avoid even the appearance of sinful behavior.

Do you really understand what this would mean? Why have laws then? If this were so then murder would be legal. If you look up the word justice (which you used) on New Advent, it says “it is a moral quality or habit which perfects the will and inclines it to render to each and to all what belongs to them.”
I think you need to think things through a bit. Yes, in general laws are (and should) built up around the moral framework of a society. Murder should be illegal.

But because something is a law, that doesn’t mean we should confuse it with morality. i.e. it may be law to go to vietnam and kill people if called up. But if that is against your moral principles it is of course a bad law, which should not be followed.

A law is not a true law if it is unjust. Think of the laws in South africa before the ANC came to power (for example).

Nowhere did I say that laws and morality are one and the same. I stated that laws should follow morality.

Agreed. We are morally obliged to obey the laws of the land, except when we have a duty to a higher authority. Then we are, of course, morally obliged to obey the highest authority.

I think it is. What if they get into trouble while drinking with you?
