How much can you drink before it becomes sinful?
I haven’t had a problem with drinking. I am underage, and I don’t drink at all. I was just curious because I know drinking by itself isn’t sinful but being drunk is. Where do you draw the line?I’d say that if you’re worried about how much you can drink before it’s sinful, then the answer to your questions would be “you can drink nothing.” Since you’re well aware of the near occasion of sin, to continue in to that near occasion, may be actually be sinful.
It’s actually quite relative. An alcoholic, who by defenition, can’t have drinks socially because they can’t keep themselves from getting drunk, it would probably be sinful for them to have just one drink.I haven’t had a problem with drinking. I never heard that, but will have to remember it.But St. Thomas Aquinas says it’s ok to drink “to the point of halarity.”
I know, it’s my battle cry when out with friends. Raise you’re glasses to the point of halarity, but no further!!! Thank you St. Thomas, PRAY FOR ME.I never heard that, but will have to remember it.![]()
As much as you want as long as it doesn’t get you drunk- or cause you to otherwise be a danger to yourself or others. A 300+ pound person who has been drinking for many years can handle a lot more than a 21 year old who’s 5’0" and 90 pounds. How much can you drink before it becomes sinful?
There is not a specified amount if that’s what you are looking for.How much can you drink before it becomes sinful?
I am of German descent, so this has always been a question for me coming from a beer culture. I have found a good orthodox confessor and spiritual director, and he has told ME (after much discussion) that it is very subjective, as some have said. What he decided on for ME is that I don’t drink so much as to endanger my ability to: conquer temptations, be nice to people, set a good example, etc. For ME that is 8-10. For some, that would be 1-2. And for these amounts I’m talking about an entire day, not just an hour at a restaurant. Drunkeness means getting to the point where the alcohol is the deciding factor in whether or not you engage in sinful activity or not.
One of the subjectives involved here is culture and conditioning. So I hope I have not scandalized myself!
I think the more appropriate question would be, “What is God’s perfect will for us in terms of drinking alcohol?” While it is noble to try to avoid sin, our attitude should not be, “How close to the line can I get without crossing it,” but rather, “How can I stay as far away from sin as possible?”How much can you drink before it becomes sinful?
