So I am a freshman in college, and classes just started on Monday. It is really hard to get a gage on some of the classes based on the first two days, but one teacher made this extremely easy. She is the professor of a public speaking class, and straight up told my class she was a ambitious lesbian and loved to curse. I feel like I have to drop this class, mainly because college is full of negative influences, I don’t really need a professor to contribute to this. I basically just thought she was being really selfish and unprofessional by telling us these things.

Do you think that is a good decision to drop the class?

I think you’re perfectly within your rights to pick professors you’re comfortable with, and also to pick a class format that you’ll enjoy.

Sometimes, the same course can have wildly different standards based on who the professor is. In one, all exams might be short essay and based entirely on lectures. They might be a nightmare to study for, they might be an utter time-vampire, and they might be incredibly hard to get an A on. In others, the exams might be multiple choice, and based on your textbook or even on learning objectives and very precise study guides. Frankly, it could be difficult to avoid getting an A in classes like those. Furthermore, I’m not sure it could be argued that a student in the former class-setting is more prepared than that in the latter. The class could just be way harder for no particularly good reason.

At this level of college, I don’t think anyone expects the students to utterly master the course they’re taking. They just want to insure that they can handle a schedule, do some work, and be exposed to the fundamentals of a particular field. Therefore, I think it’s up to the student to set themselves up for success by taking the course-professor pairing that they believe will work best for them, at least insofar as this possible.

In other words, I think you did just fine, and you made a smart move. 👍

If this makes you uncomfortable-then switch the class. Do not drop your courseload to less.
Make an appointment with the counselor and be vague, perhaps her personality or cursing part makes you uncomfortable— omit the lesibian part. She did not say she was married.

Many classes may be full though and you may end up paying for this class anyway-or. taking some class that is not within your major-know the risks first and weigh them. What if they transfer you to a class with a similar scenario too…

So it’s important to talk to the counselor.

The great thing about being in college is you CAN drop the class. I would because I as you noted wouldn’t want to hear cursing in a class I pay tuition for.

Mary.

Right well its pretty wide open for me, I have plenty of room for another class, and I haven’t declared a major so basically any gen-ed requirement course will do. But yeah I have a meeting with my advisor tomorrow so we will see how that goes

I would tell the counselor why you are dropping the class. I would also call the dean and tell him/her why you are dropping the class.

Honestly I would avoid saying anything negative and if asked just say “it wasn’t a good fit”. Reading your posts I feel you made a mature decision based on good reasoning so put I behind you have a great semester.

Can you take the class with a different instructor? If it was me, I would probably have stayed in the class and made sure I made one of my speeches on why cursing makes people sound unintelligent.

I’ve dropped classes where I wasn’t comfortable. (My first Finance class, the entire curriculum consisted of reading the Wall St Journal; now how lazy was that professor??) And why shouldn’t you explain why you dropped out? YOU ARE THE CONSUMER. You are paying good money to attend. It’s not like the professor is doing you a favor by allowing you to sit in her class.

Tell that to the people in charge. College and university is a business now more than an educational institution. Those guidance counsellors and recruitment staff they hire are hired based on their ability to sell the school to prospective students.

It might be problematic for you to say that you dropped the class because of the instructor’s avowed lesbianism. However, it might make a better impact with the university’s administration if you were to complain about her use of abusive language.

That’s not really much help. I am going to drop it, mainly because I don’t support gay marriage, and I really don’t feel like dealing with someone who is going to curse every class. There is no need for that
As you go through life, people are going to curse, and gays will continue to get married. Are you going to run and hide when ever you are in the general vacinity???
