It is a rich blessing, not just for the recipients, but for the ministers. Ministering to these people has been the single most important source of conversion in my life. I have done this for about 5 years at the nursing home/hospital. All kinds of questionable situations come up. Is the person properly disposed? I simply start the prayers and if the person is not able to pariticpate in the prayers, at least with their eyes or a nod of the head, I do not give them the host, it is a spiritual communion. I do not try to force the host into anyone’s mouth who is not responding very well.

Frequently the host must be broken. Have I dropped unnoticed pieces on the floor? I am sure of it. Have I given communion to someone in mortal sin? I am sure of it, but I cannot say that any one specific individual was for certain. You can be driven to distraction by these issues and drive others to distraction. I find it hard to believe that Christ wants His body and blood to be a source of anxieity.
Do the very best you can to reverently follow the procedures, and be at peace. We were told that if a host is spit out, we put it in a kleenex and bring it back to the sacristy and dissolve etc…
 
I returned this AM but did not find it. I had not seen where it was set so I went according to the info I had. Maybe someone else got it.

Like many I have trouble with the new mass responses we are supposed to use. At the nursing home we use the old one which does not help me learn the new. These people are mostly elderly (we do have a couple who are in their 30s) and some are in varying stages of mental deterioration. Some we have to help to remember the Hail Mary and the Our Father. Rita wears her Rosary on her head. So we don’t try anything new.
The DuPage Convalescent Center is a sprawling 4 story building so we spend more time finding and returning people than we do in prayer. There are usually about 4 to 6 of us with 15-20 people who are residents.

If you live near Wheaton, Illinois we could use some help. If you don’t there is surely a home near you that could use some.
