I was attending Sunday Mass this AM (EF) when the priest dropped a host during holy communion. Don’t ask me how it missed the paten, but it fell to the sacristy floor. The priest immediately picked it up and put it aside in the ciborium.

This is when I got deja vu from 1963…When I was being trained by the the good School Sisters of Notre Dame to receive my First Holy Communion, one of my classmates noticed a host on the floor of the church. She called Sister over who took a look, told us not to touch the host and went to find a priest. The priest came with what I thought were holy oils (may have been holy water), picked up the host with a cloth, and cleaned and blessed the area.

Well flash forward 45 years. The same thing happened. After Mass, the priest and server came out and cleaned and blessed the area. I stayed just to see if my memory had not paid tricks on me from long ago.

Now, I am curious. What prayer(s) is/are said and does the same thing happen in post V2?

Fortunately this does not happen often. In my years of assisting at Mass I have only seen this happen twice. As far as I know, no particular prayers are prescribed, only that care is taken to ensure that no one walk in the vicinity of where the host fell before that area is cleaned, that no particles of the Host remain on the floor, and that all linens used to do this are properly cleansed.

Sorry, I can’t answer your question about “what prayer(s)”, but I can safely tell you from my experience that I have never once seen any attention shown to the location where the Eucharist fell. I’ve witnessed our beloved Lord being dropped about 3 or 4 times in my life, and the last time, when the EMHC dropped Him, she left Him on the floor until Communion was over, then picked Him up, brought Him to our priest at the altar, and the priest consumed Him. I don’t remember what happened the other times, as it was during my childhood.
