Today at Mass, i didn’t see but my girlfriend told me, that she saw a man going to receive our Lord from the priest, and he received Him in the hand and as he was walking off and was about to consume our Lord he accidentally dropped it () then he quickly picked it up and ate it and kept on walking… the priest just shook his head looking disappointed…

umm was it a bad thing?

Our Lord being dropped? :ehh:

opinions please

The dropping in and of itself wasn’t bad - it was accidental.

One thing, you should receive, take one step to the side and consume immediately, BEFORE you ‘walk off’ anywhere. That way the priest can see that you’ve consumed it and not just pocketed it while walking off or anything. That might be what the priest was disappointed about.

Secondly, if I remember rightly the ideal thing is to let the priest pick up and dispose of the dropped Host. That’s another reason why you should consume it before walking away, so that he doesn’t have to run after you to deal with any droppage.

How about tonguing our Lord?
Yesterday at Mass, a teenage girl was walking away from the priest, and she was flipping her tongue in and out of her mouth with the host on it. Grrr…I had to set her straight.

Seriously, are Catholics so badly catechized??? (I’m an adult convert to Catholicism.)

Yes, they are. Very, very badly. Receiving Our Lord in Communion requires our best attention and reverence. The potential for sacrilege is very high – even just accidentally (was the guy who dropped the Host really paying attention?).

The traditional method (put in place to reduce the possiblity of sacrilege) is to receive the Eucharist on the tongue. This avoids many problems.

A traditional method for dealing with a Host that drops (or the Precious Blood spilled) is for the priest to stop what he is doing, get some Holy Water and wipe the spot where the Host fell. This is a means of showing the level of Sacredness that we’re dealing with.

Cradle Catholics are. The primary responsibility for faith education after confirmation is with the parents but in my experience they do very little of this.

We need to reform religious education then, starting in the home. I teach 7th-grade religious ed (me! a convert of only 3 years!), and I’m sad to say that our program is appallingly bad. I use an older catechism base, and for that, my students are seemingly grateful.

Parents are the “First-Line” so to speak all of the child life from birth they should be getting to know their Faith not just after Confirmation. If a cradle Catholic has been badly catechized, I’m sorry, it is the parents fault. If a teenage child has bad manners or is an unruley child… sorry… parents fault again! If parents would just do their “JOB” I think society would be a much different place. Problem is we have parents that just drop their kids off at “RE Class” or “CCD” and expect someone else to teach their kids cause they are “too busy” well sorry again …PARENTS FAULT!!! (see a trend here?)
Stop expecting other people to do your job and raise your kids the right way to know the Faith and right from wrong.
And stop blaming other people for YOUR child not being properly Catechized!

I agree that some educational reform is needed…but it starts at HOME!! Turn off the TV and break out the Baltimore Catechism for the kids just a half hour maybe once a week… start a new tradition in our homes… like FAMILY TIME.

Parents need to step up to the plate and be a player not a spectater (or a coach tater either;) )

Sorry rant over…

Humbly Yours in Christ,

Paul

It seems to me that a big part of the problem these days is that parents have come to expect that they can send their kid to day care, send their kid to school, send their kid to religious education and just expect that the kid is going to learn everything they need to know.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Kids learn from their parents in many ways. If you want your child to read, read to them, and let them see you reading; if you want your child to pray, pray with them and let them see you praying.

Too often these days, the parents drop the kid off at religious education, but they don’t take their kids to church, they don’t spend time praying with them… No wonder the lessons in religious education all too often fail to stick.

Paul,

I couldn’t agree more! Too many parents these days are lazy and selfish.

Well, it’s not a GOOD thing, but accidents happen. I’m sure the priest shook his head in disappointment not because Our Lord was accidentally dropped, but because the man consumed WHILE WALKING AWAY. You should step aside, STOP, consume, THEN continue walking. Our Lord deserves more reverenace than to just shove Him into our mouths while we’re sauntering back to our seats. However, the man did the right thing by putting the host back into his mouth instead of making a scene, bringing the host to the priest for proper disposal and getting a new host.

Good for you for having the courage to speak out and set her straight!

And, yes, Catholics are so poorly catechized. Maddening and scary.

Christ gave me the courage, because I spoke in defense of his Holy Body. I just don’t want people to misconstrue my intentions, that they may think I did it out of righteous indignation. It had nothing to do with me an everything to do with the nature of the Eucharist.

this is awesome i believe

havent played it yet but looks awesome lol:D

thank you guys for your replies… and it is true a lot of us should teach others what not to do…

Okay, I have a question.

Years ago I attended church at a parish that had a particular person that always took the host to the pews and dropped it on the floor. I happened to sit in the general section they did. I could never figure out who was doing it, although I tried. After a few weeks of this, I decided to tell someone. I waited I guess because the first time I just thought it was an accident. Subsequent times I pretty much forgot about it until the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Anyway, one day I got frustrated and decided to tell someone. I couldn’t find anyone so I gently picked up the host and started to take it to the sacresty. Unfortunately, then it dawned on me that I should never have picked it up to begin with. At that point I wasn’t going to drop it again!

Anyway, I finally found a EM and gave it to her. I figured if it was a horrible thing for me to do, she’d tell me. But she never said a word. She thanked me and took it in the back.

I don’t think I should have picked it up, should I have? 😦

Of course you should. You did the right thing. Wouldn’t it have been worse if He was just left lying there?

And don’t be afraid to speak to people if they’re consistently behaving badly in Church. Keep it cool, and to the point. The truth is the truth.

" … a particular person that always took the host to the pews and dropped it on the floor…"

I’m surprised they got away with it for so long. What a diabolical thing to do.

In the days of the early Church, some people would try to cast spells and whatnot on the host because, since the Christians maintained that it was indeed the body of Christ, they could then control God through magic and whatnot. Interesting but not really related to the thread, yeah?

When I saw that was consistently being done, I thought of how horrible someone was to re- torture and mock our Lord! I actually cried many times when I saw it. I never found out who it was or I may have said something. No, I probably would have said something. I later found out that they already knew about this and had someone go over to my section after every mass and check the floor.

I can’t understand how someone can have such disrespect even if they don’t believe in the Real Presence. 😦

Maybe the offender DID believe in the Real Presence and sought to desecrate it anyway. If so, it would be a Satanic thing to do, since Lucifer also acknowledged the Godhead and yet defied Him.
