Hello there.

I am a university student living in shared accommodation. I have 3 other house mates that I am very fond of. However all 3 of them do drugs quite regularly, class A at that. I used to partake in such activities (mainly legal, but occasionally illegal substances) but found the strength to quit cold turkey. Over the last few days they have purchased 30 grams of a class B substance and are very open about it. When it arrives I am sure they will have it out and divide it in our living room. They will attempt to sell some of it and then use the rest.

My question is what am I to do with friends like these? They keep wanting me to get involved and become the “fun and crazy guy” I used to be. My will power is fairly strong and I have not given in yet, but I would be lying to say I have not been tempted. But do I associate with people like this? It is not financially possible for me to move out. However I do not want to be confined to my bedroom and have to ignore them.

Another question is the what is the churches stance on “legal” highs. As in substances that are not legal YET. I dont want to hear the “it can lead to other things” response, I am interested in whether it is acceptable in the eyes of the church or not as a fellow student believes it is where as I believe it to be morally unsound.

Thank you for your time.

If u choose not to take anything, they should respect that

If they are real friends they should respect you and not try to push to hard for you to take some

they may have fun and say ‘come on have some or try this’ whatever but just say no im clean or leave the room while they smoke or whatever they do

i dont see why others should push or force someone else to use

its your decision ,if you didnt want to mix with guys like this id say you would do a good thing

but if you dont have another choice to move elsewhere try and stay strong and let them know your for real about not using anything

all the best God give you strength

Sometimes, just saying no is not enough. I do not know what State/Country you are in or from however; I work in a police department. You should be aware of the laws of your environment. Where I live, if a person is ‘within reach’ or ‘shares responsibility for the space’, you will be held legally responsible for what is there. My advice to you is to get OUT as soon as possible or lose all you have worked for thus far. Good luck.

make a new living arrangement.
under laws in many places you are equally guilty of any illegal activity involved in your home

get new friends

your entire academic life and career as well as your liberty is threatened as long as you allow these losers to control your manner of living.

Many of these Internet drugs are lethal. Someone near the twin cities was charged with murder this spring when a legal substance ordered online caused the death of 1 and the hospitalization of 8 others. Google it.

Move out and get new friends.

think about ti for a minute do you think God would like you to get high?

I have every sympathy for you in this. If you are unable to move out, is there a free neighborhood law centre where you could get advice on your legal situation?

You are in my prayers.

The Catechism explicitly states that the use of any illicit drug is a sin.

Any “legal” high that “isn’t legal YET” is still, currently, right now, illegal. It is therefore illicit and a sin.

Personally, your body is a temple. What you choose to put into it is your decision. But 1) be aware of why this has an explicit mention in the Catechism. 2) Follow the Biblical maxim of obeying man’s laws. 3) You should probably stay away from drugs period. I am weening myself off cigarettes and caffeine. Not because I’m a Mormon (I’m not) but because I really don’t see a need for them. Both are addicting and give me no nutritional value whatsoever. There is really no point in me partaking of them.

Just some food for thought. But you should take very seriously what you consider a “legal” high and understand what the Church means when it says partaking of an illicit substance is sinful.

I lived this exact situation, except I never bothered to participate. Just tell them that taking drugs makes you feel sick or something, and that you don’t want to do it.

I’d move out as soon as it is financially feasible, but I wouldn’t go to great lengths to get out before it’s really feasible.

If they act like jerks to you after you refuse, then you should just stay out of shared areas, in your bedroom when you’re home, and move out as soon as it’s feasible.

In my case, I just moved out after graduation and nothing ever came of it. Some of my friends had some pretty lousy things happen to them afterwards due to recreational drug use, but nothing involving the law.

Thank you for the responses.

Firstly I was supposed to say before they are “illegal” not before they are legal as some substances are very much legal.

Anyway I appreciate the responses telling me to move out, but it is just not possible. I cannot afford to move out unless I wish to live on the street.
The drugs are kept in their own bedrooms which means if the police do raid the house (happened last year due to neighbours) then we are only responsible for what is found in our own rooms.

They also invite their friends down to stay which I am fine with, until i discover they bring large amounts of drugs to sell. One time they got caught selling and as I work in the night time security industry and am connected to the arresting officers was asked to “do something”. When I refused they were not best pleased. I wish I could move out and away from this but I simply cannot afford it.

Yet again thank you for your answers and letting me vent.

Ask God to find you a place to live within your budget. You are paying something every month, right? Some other place can open up, especially if God is helping you. You won’t find anything else unless you do look, and you ask for a new place, in prayer.
May the Blessed Mother place her mantel of protection around you.

Excuses, excuses. Sorry, but I don’t buy it. If you wanted out, you could find a way out.

You allow people who SELL DRUGS in YOUR LIVING QUARTERS?

I would be calling the cops myself.

Yes I am paying an amount each month, but i have a 12 month lease. I cannot leave unless I find another person to take my place. Also I do not receive my deposit back from my current house until those 12 months are over so I cannot place a deposit on another. Let alone administration fees. Ive been looking for over a year and am unable to locate anywhere.

Then call the cops the next time your roommates break out the drugs, especially when they go to sell to others. That is reprehensible.

Or you can continue to make excuses for yourself.

Does your landlord know about the drugs? You might want to fill that person in on the dirty little secret.

Find somewhere else. These seriously don’t sound like the sort of people one wants to be involved with, especially if they are pressuring you to join their activities. I have friends occasionally smoke pot but know I am not interested and do not try to get me to join them. And class A is much more serious, there are huge legal not to mention health issues. Contact the housing services of your university, they may be able to help you with finding a new place to live.

Just because something is legal does not make is morally right. Abortion is legal, divorce is legal, there are many things that civil law allows that we as Catholics know are morally wrong. If a substance is legal but you choose to abuse it then you are doing wrong.

on the contrary I would advise any young person for whom I have responsibility to move out this week, because of the legal liability issues. having gone through this with my own kids in similar situations you may not understand the grave danger you are in and how the law will judge you.

… you may not understand the grave danger you are in and how the law will judge you.
Exactly. You live there, you are responsible, especially if it can be shown you KNEW about it.

Not worth the risk, either to your physical self, your future, or your soul.

Catholic90 I don’t appreciate you saying I am making excuses and you don’t “buy” it. This has been an issue of great discomfort that both myself, my university’ my estate agent and my family have tried very hard to solve and unless I fork out several hundred pounds I cannot move. I came here for advice, not to justify myself to somebody who does not know the details of my situation and still chooses to judge/disbelieve me. Also you come across quite rudely and condescending.

This may not be the case but it is the impression you give. Moving out is not possible unless by good fortune I find hundreds of pounds.

Thanks.

Speak to your uni admin team, you will be surprised on how much help they can offer you. Especially when its one of their students and there are drugs involved.

God bless

Dom.

Your uni should have a hardship fund available for students in dire need. I know my old housemate was able to get over £1000.
