Drunkenness a mortal sin?

Deliberate drunkenness is a sin, but in order for it to be mortal, you have to understand that it’s a sin and do it anyway. If you just kinda loose track of how many you’ve had and find yourself drunk without the premeditated intent to become drunk, it’s not a sin. If you’re deliberately trying to inebriate yourself though, then it’s a sin against the 5th commandment, because you’re deliberately causing harm to your body.

On the spiritual side of this, it’s a sin if you drink so much that you open yourself up to other sins. That would be the definition of drunkeness. If drinking a certain amount causes you to lust, become angry, lie, etc then the line has been crossed. The amount one drinks before reaching drunkeness is different for different people, so you must be careful.

In my eyes it’s a serious sin if:
it leads to other sins (including ones of omission by neglecting essential duties)
it encourages others to sin
it causes harm to your body (I’d probably include drinking to the point of falling over or throwing up here)

More than a couple of drinks is no sin in itself, unlike what evangelicals will try to claim, it depends on why you’re doing it etc. Though where to draw the line is hard and to be honest I probably drink more with Catholics than with either protestants (where it looks bad due to their view of it and also so I don’t start any arguments) or heathens (who will encourage me to drink too much)
