Drunks and Monks

Has anyone read “Drunks and Monks” by John Carmichael?

I am almost done reading it and I have to say that while some of the book was difficult to read for me because all the negative stuff that was going on in his life, it eventually turned into a wonderful testimony of the power of God and the Sacraments. I liked it and would recommend reading it. I would like to see more testimonies like that of God working in people’s lives bringing them to him and the Catholic Church. I feel we don’t hear enough stories like that. Reading it gives me more confidence to go out and spread the faith because of the difference it actually makes in people’s lives. And, it’s not just some intellectual thing. So I found it to be encouraging and would like to see more of that sort of thing out there.

Heb. 12:1 that you are referring to, the saints are
a shining example for us, much as the pillar of
light by night and cloud by day led the Israelites
on their journey thru the desert!!

I’ve read it and overall I thought it was a great book.

The writer’s style keeps it very interesting and moving quickly and I LOVE the overall story. But like you, I found parts of it difficult to read, even depressing.

That people go through such terrible trials and not only survive but grow in faith and holiness is amazing and a wonderful testimony.
