I wonder if anyone has anything to say about the feature in most nVidia cards and somewhat higher ATI cards which allows them to set a higher resolution first for rendering and render things at a higher resolution and then scale it down to the actual size of one’s monitor.

The effect is that if you use 1080p resolution (full HD), the GPU will render frames in e.g. 1440p (‘4K’) internally but scale down just like you would downsample a .jpg image.

This is obviously not the same as actually having an expensive 4K monitor, and it certainly isn’t going to produce a nice Windows desktop, but it could be good enough in games, particularly where the interface font is not already small in 1080p.

So far I’ve got mixed feelings. On the one hand, things do have a higher-res look. On the other hand, the monitor feels small for this.

What’s your experience?
