duct cleaning?

I have a guy comming out ot the house to inspect/sweep the chimney for use this season and the same company is willing to give a pretty good deal on cleaning and santizing the air ducts.

What’s everyone’s experience with getting this done? Any real benefit or is it all hype?

I had the ducts cleaned. We were experiencing daily stuffiness, frequent sinus headaches and infections. Got the ducts cleaned and the sinus problems greatly diminished.

It is not cheap - however I am a firm believer in clean ducts if your household suffers from sinus and allergy problems.

That’s what I thought too, but for 22 vents (in and out takes) it’s only going to run me $275? I think that’s a decent price? Not chump change by any means, butif it really does make the system work more efficently and reduces allergies, I’d think that well worth the price?

It is not a bad price at all…but you want to make sure your person uses a scrape method of cleaning. Not just the vacuum method.

It takes quite a while to scrape all the ducts clean. Many claim to clean the ducts but there are few that clean the ducts really well. Do your homework in the methods used because it is so much money.

We had our ducts cleaned a few years ago. It didn’t seem to make any difference in the amount of dust in the house. I suppose we used a company that used an inefficient method

**They said they would be “brushing and vacuum” then when done, they spray a sanitzer through the system. they said it shoudl take between 2 and 3 hours? **

We got a Living Air Purifier a few of years ago which solved my wife’s breathing problems. There is some controversy over its emission of ozone, which is hazardous in concentration. However, we keep it dialed down to where we can’t smell the ozone and have had no problems.

I have run it full blast in isolated spaces, with no one there, where there was a mold problem; also where there was problem with cat odor. It seemed to clear the problem quickly.

I think it cost a couple of hundred dollars.

I have had our ducts cleaned a couple of times using the brush and vacuum method. It did help clean up the air. It isn’t as effective as the more labor-intensive methods but we also have an electronic air filter, so our system stays relatively clean. We need to keep things clean for out 2 serious allergy sufferers.

We had the forced-hot-air ducts cleaned in our previous home. We paid a few hundred dollars (I forget exactly how much), and the company used a machine with long flexible rods with several foot-long ropes (?) on the end that rotated around and around and brushed off the gunk on the insides of the air ducts. Then the stuff got vacuumed up. The house was about fifty years old, the previous owners had been smokers, and the inch-thick gunk in the ducts had to be seen to be believed. And we’d been breathing that for a year or two before we had it done? Ugh! It was DEFINITELY worth it, and we’re not even allergy-prone.

Just get references to make sure your particular company is reputable.
