I am a freshmen at Duke University. If you follow college sports, you might know that a very popular cheer at Duke is “Go to hell, Carolina.” Should I not participate in this? I don’t actually mean for anyone to go to hell, and I think vast majority of students would say the same thing, but I know that’s not something to joke around with.

There’s worse out there…

I see two problems:

First, there’s no problem with an intense rivarly, but methinks the perspective is distorted for a lot of people, college students, alumi, and regular fans alike. It’s a school, an institution. It’s not a living entity. People tend to associate themselves too closely to a big business that is the modern university system.

Second, it’s just plain rude. Whatever happened to respect? You respect your opponents, even though your goal is to beat the p out of them. This is not respect, it’s not pride “We’re better than you are”.

Last, methinks it shows a general disrespect for the public in general.

OK, that was three things. 🤷

Well, Duke sucks, so I wouldn’t worry.

DD grad from UNC, SIL from State, so I think I will sit this one out.

Neither phrase is even catchy. If those phrases are the best cheers that a Duke or SC student can come up with, I would fear to even consider them for gainful employment. Absolutely no creativity. 🤷

When at a sporting event, the cheers are hardly unanimous. I don’t think anyone will notice if you don’t participate in that particular cheer.

That was my first thought. 🙂 It doesn’t even seem catchy. One of my friend’s high school used this cheer:

“Hey, Hey, that’s okay. You will work for us one day!”

That’s the cheer they used to save face when they were losing. :o

id transfer to unc and get away from having to sing that song.

god did make the skies carolina blue.

I don’t like this usage of hell. We as Christians should be aware that this is no joking matter, and if we knew what it was like, I am sure that we would never use it lightly again.

Transfer to UNC immediately.

No one likes Duke. They’re Devils after all! 😉

God Bless
