Dumb First Communion question

Sorry if this is a stupid question…

Our son just made his First Communion (YAY!) and on the certificate, in the lines for the parents, it has my maiden name, instead of my married name. Is that standard, or should I ask the parish office for a correction tomorrow?

Our baby’s baptismal certificate is similar.

Maybe that’s not enough evidence to make a generalization, but I suspect that each parish does record the mother’s maiden name on important documentation for children.

When someone is baptized the mother’s maiden name is recorded in the register and that’s how the certificate is issued. I’ve had to answer that question from upset parents over the years.

Generally that same information will be entered in the First Communion register but I’ve seen both over the years. Some dioceses are quite specific as to how it wants you to record that information, the Diocese of Charleston, SC, for example. I’ve never seen anything remotely similar in my diocese.

Baptism certificates usually have the mother’s maiden name on them. I don’t know about 1st Communion though.

Since we ask for the Baptismal certs, it is customary to use the same format as on the birth certificate.

It’s a very good way of tracking family lineage.

Don’t fret over it.

In general it should use the name on your baptismal record, but it varies. Its helpful for them to matchthe parents baptismal re ords to link them together. Half my kids show my wife’s maiden name and the other half have her married name. When she was baptized we were married so her records have her married name. So which of my kids record’s are “right”? Either are fine even if inconsistent.
