First of all, since this is not the Eastern Catholic forum, that puts the context of my post in the Western Church, not the Eastern Churches. The Church does indeed have a preference for Latin in this context. I stand by that. I said nothing about, and certainly nothing against the Eastern Churches–you are reading something that I did not say into what I actually said. If I had either posted my comments in the EC forum, or I had made any reference to the ECs you might have a point–but I did neither.Does not matter. There are 22 Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church, none of which utilize Latin as a liturgical language. By saying that the Church shows a preference to Latin over all other languages relegates the Eastern Rites to being “less Catholic” than the west. That is nothing but arrogance. Latin is not a “holy language.” It is best that Church documents stay in Latin because it is a dead language, and therefore immune form change in vocabulary. However I must agree that the Liturgy in the vernacular is preferred when the faithful are homogeneous.
In this context, the Latin language is not only preferred when the “faithful are homogeneous” but Latin is the preferred language, regardless of what might be the vernacular language(s) of the assembly.
If you want to debate or discuss the way that the Eastern Churches use their own liturgical languages and/or their own vernaculars, I’m sure you could start or find such a thread in the Eastern Churches forum.
