I find this confusing. Was the speaker going to talk about being gay? Or was she going to speak about her experience as a black woman during Black History Month? Does having her speak on the latter somehow endorse the former? Are we to simply shun all actively gay people even when their sexual orientation isn’t relevant?

I think that this was a good decision by the school, and it is good that some parents have stood up for Catholic beliefs. The issue is not with her being gay, but rather that she is currently in a gay “marriage” against the teachings of the Church. There are likely other suitable speakers who could be invited that would not invite such scandal upon the school.

I see both sides of this. On one hand, it is unjust discrimination to prohibit someone based on being homosexual something unrelated to that orientation. Municipal service would seem to qualify. On the other hand, in a high school setting, anyone invited in can be seen as a role model, and that is not consistent with Catholic teaching.

The pastor stated that issue was with the “contentious environment” that the protesters would have brought to the school. I guess the pastor thought that the threats of a protest were credible. The cancellation had nothing to do with the speaker or her family. She apparently grew up in the parish and attended the school. If the issue was with her and her family, she never would have been invited in the first place.

I understand that part. It’s the threat of protests that has me confused. What would people protest this woman’s speech?
