The Church allows for a vigil Mass for a Sunday or holy day to be celebrated in the evening of the previous day, but that is different than saying that “Catholics sometimes count the end of a day at sundown.” In any case, Lenten Fridays are considered to be 24-hour periods extending from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday.
