Are you allowed to willingly end your life for the purpose of saving someone else or is that suicide and not permitted

It can be a heroic act of Charity depending on the situation and motives. Saint Maximilian Kolbe gave up his life for another and now he is a Saint. I think there is a Filipino priest on the way to canonization for giving up his life for someone.

If you are alive and want to donate your heart to someone dying, NOPE! That is murder. Now, a tear jerking movie is SEVEN . Very noble deed But, God wasn’t going to like it. But Judgements are God’s.
After you’re dead, you can be an organ donar

Yeah thanks and also Jesus Christ himself died for us, how could we forget

Dying to save another is not suicide. Suicide is an act of despair.

We would then need to question people who died for their faith, just recant and live.

Depends, for example I would say killing yourself if told kill yourself or I’ll kill this person would be wrong.

What Saint Maximillian Kolbie did was OK though.

Don’t really know for sure where the line is.

It is the most foolish and sinful thing you can do in this world.
1.First of all the question is hypothetical. What is the guarantee that the other will be saved if and after you die?
2.Who gave you authority to end your precious life given by God,be whatever the purpose?
3.Why should the other person agree for this unless he is a crook ?

Dying for your faith is martyrdom. Suicide is despair/mental illness. Murder is murder. I don’t mean to sound trite, here.

As I text, I am a murderer. I have an in ground pool. My dogs were interested in something. It was a live critter. It looked like a baby squirrel. I can save all things. A real St. Francis. I can’t do brother Rat. I’m not in the country. Where would I put it. Plus, where did it come from? There is a sewer nearby. Time to clean the shed… or Get someone to clean the shed. It’s said drowning isn’t a bad way to go… God forgive me.

I prayed over the 2 snakes I killed. They were going to die!! EWW

JUST NEEDED TO SHARE ANXIETY AND GUILT W SOME BODY.

God bless you all.

A couple decades back, a cop ran over and grabbed a kid from jumping off a bridge…
The cop almost went over himself,
but his partner was there and was able to pull them back in.
Cop said he had to do it - there was no question about it.

This was said by Joseph Campbell to Bill Moyers - interview -

Campbell then went on into sacrifice -
how a soldier throws himself on a hand grenade - sacrifice - to save his platoon.
Mom and Dad do everything for kids - another form of sacrifice -
Fire fighters. But soldiers do it -
I wish there wasn’t such a high rate of suicide among them - damn sad.

Sounds like Jesus, and in fact sounds like the greatest thing someone can do for another if I can recall my Jesus quotes right…

You mean the one where He says, “greater love than this no man has, than to lay down his life for a friend?” That one?

In fact, I wonder if all soldiers who die fighting to defend the freedom of the oppressed and the weak, are not instantly brought home to the Father for eternity.

My friend you have hit a very sore point for me, God gave us dominion, so why is it so easy to kill, and so impossible to keep alive. My house is quite literally “Evil Dead 2”, any injured animal I try and shelter and restore back to their own lives will inevitably be dead by dawn. God please it is not fair, mice rats sparrows thrushes kingfishers turtle doves pigeons, all of them dead.

Apologies for the side track.

We had a the death word in this thread. I couldn’t see starting a thread about my dilemma. I save everything but snakes and rodents (mice & rats)
I don’t like that. I sat in the chair praying for its death to be quick. I’m not in the country to let the critter go. Ppl in a subdivision don’t entertain rats.
I’m as unhappy w me as you are. I have trouble typing RAT (EWW) in texts.
May God have mercy on my soul.

Dying to save another is very vague. That could mean many, many different things. You both are in the same place and are gonna die, you both are in the same place and they’re gonna die but you could sacrifice yourself, their dying in a hospital bed and you have no problems at all and suddenly decide to rip out your heart to let the other survive, etc.

The original post was regarding one willingly offer to die to save another .Policeman dying during the course of saving another, mother dying while trying to save child, soldier dying while fighting for the country etc.are different things.
There is absolutely no doubt that willingly offer to die for whatever reason-even if it is to save Pope is a grave sin.

If maybe shooter came to the work office and said to you soecifically “if I shoot you everyone will be saved but if I spare you I will kill everyone else”

Hypathetical so let’s just say for the puropse of this the person sticks to his word

What do you mean by “willingly end your life”? Could you give an example or scenario?

You might examine whether the principle of double effect applies. Double effect is where you intend to accomplish one effect which is tied to another effect which you do not intend but rather accept.

Here is a scenario for you: In the Cold War, it was the responsibility of US Air Force pilots to destroy Russian bombers in the event that they posed an imminent nuclear threat, say, they were in US airspace and believed to be carrying nuclear weapons. US fighter aircraft were equipped with missiles and guns to accomplish this, but if those were expended or inoperable and no other help were on the way, the pilots were commanded to fly their aircraft into the bomber at high speed in order to destroy it.

In this scenario, the pilot deliberately causes the collision, and he knows with certainty that it will end his life. He accepts his own death, but his intention is not to end his life, but to save the lives of millions of his countrymen. The pilot could save his own life at that moment by flying away.

If you were in the pilot’s place, what would you do, and why?

That is a very tricky scenario, I probably would save my own life because the other posts here seem to say if I didn’t do that I would be sinning. Then I would probably hope that whoever was incharge would gather up even more fighter planes to go in for round 2 but not ending your own life

Sounds like a bad movie plot. When is the last time you heard of a psycho killer in real life making a deal like that with his victims?

It’s more likely that the gunman will be shooting indiscriminately, so let’s build a scenario around that. You are a school teacher with a classroom full of little children, and the gunman is about to enter. You can hide under your desk, or you can attempt to neutralize the gunman. With the element of surprise in your favor, you just might do it. You could deliver a lethal blow with your scissors – trust me, there is a way – but he might shoot you first.

What would you do?
