Dying with a scapular

Also certain prayers (the shoulder wound devotion) say they forgive all venial and mortal sins
What St Bernard was told was:
'“I had on My Shoulder while I bore My Cross on the Way of Sorrows, a grievous Wound which was more painful than the others, and which is not recorded by men. Honor this Wound with thy devotion, and I will grant thee whatsoever thou dost ask through its virtue and merit. And in regard to all those who shall venerate this Wound, I will remit to them all their venial sins, and will no longer remember their mortal sins.”
So it is not an unconditional gift.

That’s what I assumed

Maybe it removes some temporal punishment

Either way it’s a good devotion
Especially because it’s not very well known

I guess I will wear one soon

But the Carmelites are very chaste
So my sun goes directly against that
And while I’m trying to overcome it

I don’t think I fit the criteria
I have to pray some of liturgy of the hours as well I think?
I could wear it as sign of devotion as I would a cross necklace and as a symbol of Mary to comfort me

But I don’t think I am currently capable of its full potential

I intend to win against it
With God’s help

But I want to be devoted because it offers something of infinite value

It is impossible to die in a state of mortal sin while wearing the scapular. You will either repent and be saved, or you will not die wearing the scapular, for whatever seemingly absurd reason.

Thanx for the link, it has been eye-opening,
I was given a brown scapular to wear by
my RCIA instructor when I was hospitalized
in the mental ward, not knowing what virtue
it gives or how to obtain graces from it.
Now that I know, I will TRY to live the Carmelite
Way of life as given in the following guide-lines:
The spirituality of the Carmelite Order is one of the preeminent spiritual traditions of the Catholic Church. It is difficult to reduce this spirituality to a few sentences. One who wears the scapular should certainly reflect upon the teachings of the great Carmelite saints, three of whom are doctors of the Church.

A few basic introductory principles of Carmelite spirituality would be
  1. frequent participation in the Mass and reception of Holy Communion;
  2. frequent reading of and meditation on the Word of God in Sacred Scripture;
  3. the regular praying of at least part of the Liturgy of the Hours;
  4. imitation of and devotion to Mary, the woman of faith who hears the Word of God and puts it into practice;
  5. the practice of the virtues, notably charity, chastity (according to one’s state of life), and obedience to the will of God.

I believe that if someone lives faithfully with the Scapular but messes up near their death
That God will keep them alive for their final repentance or work a miracle for them because of Mary interceding for us

Indeed, such miracles have been recorded. It is the superstitious who find themselves suffering sudden and unprovided death while not wearing the scapular.

Wear the scapular. Ask your priest to enroll you into the brown scapular devotion. You then become part of the Carmelite family. While not a Carmelite you benefit from their prayers.

It’s like joining a confraternaty. Where your prayers are United with members of that confraternaty. Your prayer strengthens their prayers. Their prayers strengthen your prayers.

Just like the liturgy of the hours. Your prayer is United to the prayer of the Church.

The scapular or the rosary confraternaties are just less structured.

I figured it wouldn’t be that but some people gave me vague answers

So just wanted to like get some certainty

Just go with what the Church teaches regarding our judgment, quoting St John of the Cross:
"At the evening of life we shall be judged on our love."

I wouldn’t rely on any particular adornment, etc, to get you there.

Just like the rosary is more than a list of prayers said in succession, the Brown scapular is more than just adornment. It is a devotion. It is a path to the love which you speak.

It is an invitation to share in the spirituality of Carmel, a spirituality that has produced many Saints.

And that’s all good. I’m saying that by itself it means nothing. If one dies wearing it, without having grown in love IOW.

I mean, does anyone honestly think that someone could die with a ton of mortal sin on their soul, be fully unrepentant to the end, and God would go, “ah, but, see, there is that piece of cloth. Well, thems the rules. Welcome to heaven. Way to game the system.”

Of course not. If that were true, we wouldn’t need to do anything at all. No mass, no confession, no worship or love of God. Just throw on your scapular and you’re covered. It’s superstitious nonsense.

Now that isn’t to say that everyone who wears one views it that way, but if people think it’s some kind of guaranteed free ticket to heaven then…

In my opinion, wearing a scapular is in the same category as carrying a rabbit’s foot, or a preserved 4-leaf clover in your wallet. It’s all wishful thinking…
Well, that is insulting. It is also a violation of the conduct rules for CAF which require us to be respectful of the religious beliefs of others.

But you’re an agnostic so your opinion is kinda not valid

A rabbits foot or clover doesn’t require devotion
The scapular doesn’t promise good luck or good fortune
It’s more a devotion that promises purgatory at least after ones death

But only if you follow the devotion
The scapular itself is just a symbol of it
