I would love to see modules for catholics added on to e-Sword, Haydock commentary, possibly Catholic Commentary by Bernard Orchard from 1950, the Catechism, St Thomas Catena, and Summa Theologica, A Textual Concordance of Holy Scripture By: Rev. Thomas David Williams TAN Books, A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture By: Bishop Frederick Justus Knecht D.D . That being said I have found some modules not on the e-Sword Web site that may be of interest, I will probably have to put this in a few posts.

One thing, when I downloaded the prayers, Catechism and other .zip files they turned out to be .efw files. Anybody familiar with these?

It is modified zip file. Try renaming the extension to “.zip”, then running an unzip program on it.

I have download the BeST 2.0 Alpha program which than required that I download a couple of microsoft progams related to net frame something like that. I ran through the program BeST 2.0 Alpha numerous times,

I couldnot get it to read anything other then the Book and Chapter, none of the commentary will read once loaded into e-Sword, it also doesn’t seem like it will load multiple files or allow for multiple books unless one purchases the premium program, a number of things turned off in the free downloadable probram???
I used a set up like this:

Mat 1:1 The first English Testament, divided into verses, was that printed at Geneva, by Conrad Badius, in the year 1557. (Haydock) — “The book of the Generation,” is not referred to the whole gospel, but to the beginning, as in Genesis v. “This is the book of the generation of Adam.” (Estius) — The book of the[1] Generation, i.e. the generation or pedigree, which is here set down in the first sixteen verses. In the style of the Scriptures any short schedule or roll is called a book, as the bill or short writing of a divorce, is called a little book. (Matthew v. 31.) (Witham) — Jesus, in Hebrew Jesuah, is the proper name of Him, who was born of the Virgin Mary, who was also the Son of God, “a name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.” (Luke ii.) It signifies Saviour, “because he was to save his people from their sins.” He was also called Christ, which signifies anointed; for though in the Old Testament kings, priests, and prophets were anointed, and though many were then designated by the name of Jesus, properly, and by an invariable custom of the New Testament, that person is exclusively signified, who, on account of the union of the divine and human nature, was anointed by the Holy Ghost above all his fellows. (Psalm xliv. and Hebrews i. 9.) Whence in this turn the hypostasis is understood, in which the two natures, the divine and human meet. (Estius)
Mat 1:2 He begins with Abraham, the father of the faithful, because to him the promise was made, that all generations should be blessed in his seed. (Theophylactus)
Mat 1:3 See Genesis xxxviii, Mat 1:6. & dein. and Zera of Thamar, her daughter-in-law. (Haydock)…

Mat 2:1 King Herod the Great, surnamed Ascalonite, was a foreigner, but a proselyte to the Jewish religion. …

a) You have to tell BeST that this is to be a commentary module, or a Bible Module,or whatever type it is.
This is done by changing the XML line that is the first line of the file.

b) AFAIK, VPL does not work for any resource types other than Bibles.

c) Formatting is critical. Whilst BeST is extremely flexible about the type, and correctness of the XML, and other formatting types it can recognize, it does require some adherence to the formal definition of the markup that is used.

Putting book, chapter, verse data in parenthesis won’t work.
They have to be in something approximating XML format.

<book =“mark”><chapter = “1”><verse =“01”>

d) AFAIK, the only difference between the Standard version of BeST and the Premium version are related to Pocket e-Sword. More specifically, directly transforming e-Sword resources into Pocket e-Sword.

I have converted a Rich Text to plain text format, I do not understand here how to tell it is a commentary module in the beginning line, I chose commentary in the circle that popped up in the program before loading the file.

I have no clue what this is, but I am working with a commentary-Haydock Commentary

The program seems to want the Book listed as it is listed in e-sword so Matthew becomes Mat followed by space followed by chapter number followed by colon followed by verse
Mat 1:2 and then the verse here etc.???

Putting book, chapter, verse data in parenthesis won’t work.

As one enters the program there are circles to highlight for choices in each step, not all choices are available at each step, I guess I also do not get it how to keep the data growing, as in adding chapters, and books as time goes by. But 1st things 1st I cannot get it to load up the first few chapters of a given book to load, let alone adding chapters and books.

BeST can convert HTML to e-Sword resource.

I expect to release documentation of using BeST, Text2DAO and other utility programs within the fortnight.

Hi All,

I have just converted the Haydock Catholic Bible Commentary into E-sword format. I have uploaded it into my e-snips public folder for those you want a copy of it.

esnips.com/web/CatholicEsword/

I am in the midst of converting the Vatican II documents into e-sword format as well soon. Will keep you updated.

Does anyone have an electronic copy of
  1. Catholic Commentary by Bernard Orchard from 1950
  2. A Textual Concordance of Holy Scripture By: Rev. Thomas David Williams TAN Books
If anyone does have a copy, could they send it to me? I am trying to find a copy to convert it to e-sword formats as well.

God Bless!

You are fantastic, thank you, How many people realize the potential gold mind for the most complete Bible and Catholic study we potentially have here.

Yes I have an electronic copy of Catholic Commentary by Bernard Orchard: I need an email address to email this to you.
Question though is the Catholic Commentary under copyright, I am aware it is no longer in print, and hightly unlikely it would ever go back into print.

I do not know where you can get a electronic copy of Textual concordance but this would be a fantastic addition.

I hope to have St Thomas Aquinas Catena done within a few weeks, can you potentially host it on your enips site, or blog whatever this source is for esword modules.

Can someone do some checking into the possibility of Iganatius Bible Study Commentary, Navarre commentary producing a modules for these if they would then sell it or market it for a fee like some of the commentary and dictionaries are still copyrighted they are sold then as add ons to the Esword.
Another potential is New Advents encyclopedia.

I know that Father Harden now deceased has a catholic dictionary on the web which I have downloaded. The Potential here if phenomenal nothing like this for Catholics anywhere!!!

I should also be able to load St Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologia, as a topical esword module, need to know though if this is copyrighted, I know it is available on at least one catholic web site

Hi Michael,

You’re most welcome. Just doing my part to make it convenient for us Catholics to have access to such resources. 🙂

You can send the copy to my email account at terencefx@gmail.com

Could you also send me Father Harden’s Catholic Dictionary as well?

I should indicate that the current version of the e-sword Haydock commentary does not include the bibliography for each verse commented on. I had some issues with getting it in. I do not think it is of utmost importance as compared to the contents. I will get that in with another version another time.

Theres no problem with me hosting those files for you. Just send them to me when you are done and I will load them up 🙂

I’m still rewriting it. 😦

e-Sword 7.9.0 — which was not publicly released — has so many changes, that a complete rewrite of all of the documentation I’ve written is more or less mandated. So I’m tackling that, as I write the documentation for BeST, and the other e-Sword utility programs.

The current version of e-sword is 7.9.8. I’m hoping the next release of e-Sword does not require another major documentation rewrite. (I’m hope I can simply describe the changes in one page— two if I include screen shots.)
Off topic request:

I’m looking for a volunteer that can read/write Latin fluently enough to translate technical computer terms from English into Latin. (This is directly related to e-Sword.)

I haven’t looked at the resources you’ve created, so my requests might be out of place. [But other people creating resources for any Bible Study program needs to do the same thing.]
  • Include complete bibliographic citation of your source material. (If possible, trace back both e-text and hard copy editions.);
  • Get permission from the copyright holder to distribute the material;
  • Include a copy of the permission to distribute the material in your resource. (If it is public domain, state why you believe it is public domain.);

Hi Jonathon,

Thanks for the information. Its my first time so I am not too familiar with the process. I’ll remove those resources from my public folder until I get around to verifying and getting the appropriate permissions.

Terence should be fine with the Haydock commentary posted on the web. It was a potential future project I was going to attempt.

Haydock commentary is from 1859, this is no longer under copyright just everthing that is over 100-150 years is no longer under copyright to the best of my knowledge. I believe Terrance probably obtained the electronic version of Haydock from Todd Eastons site haydock1859.tripod.com/
Todd Easton CatholicBook@aol.com

I have already written to him by email to make sure he had no problem in forming a esword module the following is his response:
Hi Michael,
I have no problem with your using my transcription of the Haydock Bible commentary in the manner you mention in your email. However, I hope you understand that my transcription is still a work in progress. At the present time, all I have to offer is a raw transcription which I know, from what little proofreading that I have done so far, contains a fairly large number of errors and omissions. It will take some time, probably years, for me to proofread the whole thing through at least once and correct most of the errors.

Best wishes in Christ,
Todd Easton

Now I believe that Terrance should be able to leave Haydock up there on line.

Terrance I have sent you the Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, let me know if you get it ok. The Catholic Commentary I am not sure if it is copyrighted or not, I do not know how to find out for sure. The 1950 version has not been in print for over 30 years, There was a newer version created in 1960 or later. It also is not in print, I doubt if it will ever go into print again, simply because of the better commentary being produced by Ignatius and Navarre.

Father Hardens dictionary is on the web in two locations, my understanding it is copyrighted and permission was granted to those parties to put it on the web, so I would imagine it would be possible to obtain permission to put this out there in a module for esword, not exactly sure how to try to obtain this permission. When you get the Catholic commentary I can try sending the electronic version of Father Hardons catholic dictionary

I was more concerned about copyright issues on more recent material. (So yes, it can, and should stay up.)
However, I hope you understand that my transcription is still a work in progress. At the present time, all I have to offer is a raw transcription which I know, from what little proofreading that I have done so far, contains a fairly large number of errors and omissions.
This is what I was more concerned about, with the Haydock Commentary. I’d suggest copying the entire note into the description section of the commentary resource. (Assuming Todd Easton approves, provide contact information for Todd. That way e-Sword users can send errata back to him, for inclusion in future releases of the commentary.)
Father Hardens dictionary … be possible to obtain permission to put this out there in a module for esword, not exactly sure how to try to obtain this permission.
How to do this depends upon a couple of factors.
  • Royalty payments;
  • Commercial distribution sans royalty payments;
  • Gratis distribution;
  • Type of organization that permission is being requested from;
  • Current relationship of that organization with e-Sword;
I’m not going to go into the optimal way to obtain permission for each of those factors here.
  • For the first two, you pretty much have to let Equipping Ministries and/or eStudySource do the negotiation.
  • If the organization has an existing relationship with e-Sword, then you also need to let Equipping Ministries and/or eStudySource do the negotiation. [Some organizations have a relationship with e-Sword, even though none of their material has been legally distributed in e-Sword format. ]
I like what you guys are doing. What I’m looking at here, is the long term. Learn from the mistakes made by other e-Sword users.

e-Sword has suffered from
  • Unauthorized distribution of material under copyright;
  • Poor quality transcription of material into e-Sword format;
For the first point, obtain permission to distribute prior to doing so. Most organizations are willing to grant permission to do so. Usually organizations that decline permission to distribute state why they are doing so. Just thank them for their time and effort, and go onto to another resource. Down the road,they may change their mind.

For the second point. My personal experience with organizations that decline permission to distribute have had the following reasons:
  • e-Sword is a hotbed of pirated material, and we don’t want to be associated with that activity;
  • e-Sword resources are unfaithful transcriptions of the hard copy, and we don’t want to be associated with that lack of quality control;
    Other reasons are also given, but those are the easiest to correct.]
Proof read your work. Don’t give Exodus 50 chapters, as one of the Spanish versions of The Jerusalem Bible does. Make sure the notes for Malachi 4:6 (3:24 in the Vulgate) are for that verse, and not Matthew 1:1, as one of the Spanish commentaries does.

If it appears that there are spelling or grammatical errors in the source, go upstream to verify that your source text is correct. (More than one Bible Study Program developer has been given source from the copyright owner that contained spelling or other errors. )

For "provisional"texts, like the Haydock Commentary, state that it is a work in progress. People will forgive/overlook errors if the reason for those errors is provided, and they have a way to submit corrections for inclusion in future releases.

Hi All,

I have reposted up the Haydock Commentary. I have added the bibliography for all the verses indicated in Todd Easton’s electronic version as well. Do highlight to me if there are any errors.

Current Version - Ver.0.2

Version 0.2 - Added Bibliography. Fixed 2 Timothy Introduction, Verses and Bibliography all in Introduction of Book instead of respective locations.

Version 0.1 - Initial version without bibliography in New Testament

God Bless!

Jonathon can you explain the terms above the definitions. I believe you gave me indication that gratis distribution is freely given if true how does that translate with the word gratis. gratis seems to be like given maybe freely but donations accepted???

At any rate can you define all three in more detail??

Thank You

Michael G;:
At any rate can you define all three in more detail??
  • Royalty payments;
This is when the copyright owner wants a royalty payment.
** For some resources, this is a one time payment, regardless of number of copies that are distributed. For example, the publisher says: “Pay us $500, and you can distribute the material from your website only.” Typically, these are available from e-Sword.net, at no cost to the user.
** For some resources, this is a per copy payment. For example, the publishers says: “Pay us $10 per copy that you distribute.” Typically, these are available from eStudySource.com.
  • Commercial distribution sans royalty payments;
This is when the resource creator wants a payment. The resource creator need not be, and usually is not the copyright holder. For example, sacred-texts.com sells a DVD of the website for US$100.00. Most of this content is public domain.

I’m not aware of any resources for e-Sword being distributed in this manner.
  • Gratis distribution;
This is when the resource is distributed for free.
For example, to obtain a copy of OxygenOffice, one downloads it from the project website on sourceforge.net.

User created and constructed resources tend to fall into this category.
