Do any CAF members remember it? A pre-Family Ties Meredith Baxter was one of the stars. Despite high ratings, the show was cancelled after one season under controversial circumstances.

Yes. It was about a rich Catholic girl who marries a working-class Jewish man. The couple got along great; it was each’s parents that didn’t get along.

Interestingly, Meredith Baxter (Bridget) and David Birney (Bernie) fell in love in real life and eventually got married for real.

But the marriage, like the sitcom, didn’t last… I remember the old show too.

I recall the sitcom, which I found mildly amusing. I guess it was something of a novelty in those years (at least on television) to present a show dealing with a bi-religious couple.

Jews consider it gravely sinful for a Jewish man to marry a non-Jew because it means that his children will not be Jewish. CBS faced much hostility over the show.

FYI, according to Reform Judaism, if either one of the interfaith couple is Jewish and the child is raised Jewish, the child is considered to be Jewish even if the non-Jewish parent does not convert to Judaism. IOW patrilineal descent is acceptable.

I remember the show. It played during the 72-73 season, and it came in fifth in the seasonal ratings. It was cancelled because of all the controversy, and according to the web site IMDB it is the highest ranked show to ever be cancelled.

I remember watching an episode of 7th Heaven where the oldest boy was engaged to a jewish girl, they loved each other, but the real problem was with the parents of the 2, one being a Rabbi, other a Christian preacher, but eventually I think they held a joint-denominational marriage! My ex-wife loved 7th Heaven.

What if one parent is Christian, one Jewish, and they decide to raise the kids as Catholics?

The marriage didn’t last, probably because Baxter is gay. She came out a while ago and got married this past December.
