Early Christian writings circulated but not canonized

I was looking for the list of (obviously) apostolic new testament era writings that didn’t make it to the new testament and why.

Ah, k. So, you have the list now, so as to why…It is my understanding that canonicity depends on Apostolic authorship, or from a disciple of an Apostle. A friend of mine likes to point out that Pope Clement wrote a letter to the Corinthians, and even tho he was pope, it wasn’t inspired (tho i don’t know about the infallibility status of it). The Early Church Fathers are authoritative, but not inspired.

Books did not make it to the New Testament because they did not fully measure up to Apostolic Teaching. The Gospel message went with the office of the ordained to teach, not to the individual to teach. Tradition preserved Scripture, and the authority of Scripture itself is a Tradition.

Another reason is that the books in question were not universally accepted, therefore rejected. And another because they contained Gnostic views, something Paul and John had warned us about.

Some bishops wanted the Didache and the Book of Clement to be canonized, but they didn’t make it because they failed the Church’s strict criteria for canonization, not because they are erroneous. There are more criteria but I lost them.
