Thanks for the sites. I will check this out. However, I’m concerned by your last statement. I’ve come to understand that the Eucharistic teaching in the Catholic Church is correct but for me the jury is out on the Perpetual virginity of Mary, the immaculate conception, Purgatory, and the celebacy of the priesthood. Where does that place me? Keep in mind I serously miss some of the Church’s traditions and am considering returning to the church.
Keep studying and praying. The main issue is authority. Does the Catholic Church have the authority conferred by Christ to teach without error by the guidance of the Holy Spirit?

For me, there are too many weakness and deficiences in the Protestant doctrine of *sola Scriptura *to even consider Protestantism. I suppose this is a big reason why I am Catholic. The Bible without any visible, authoritative Church makes no sense to me.

Well, authority is an issue for me as well. Clements letter to the Corinthians is quite clear that the Bishop has authority and the laity has an obligation to submit to the Bishop. Even if they disagree. Clement is to close to Apostolic teaching for me to not pay attention to it. Also as I’ve study scripture it is quite clear that Judiasm has a long history of Oral tradition. In fact, while studing Jesus Rabbinic background it seems clear that he up held Jewish Oral tradition in interpreting the Torah. He also made new or exegete appropiate understanding of Torah. When studing the New Testiment it’s clear that the Oral Tradition came first. According to Eusibius Mark who was a coworker of Peter wrote down his gosple in a maner to get the most Theological impact rather than chronilogical order. He did this through the Oral teachings of Peter quiet similar to how the Jews look at Talmud. The letters of the New Testiment are deffinately apostolic teachings as they exegete the Old Testiment. Very Talmudic. Jesus did say do what the Pharasees teach because they sit in the seat of Moses but not to act like them. Oral Tradition has authoritative meaning in Jesus’ teaching and the early christian church. I’ve looked at scripture Sola Scriptura and have hit road blocks in understanding it wasn’t until looking at context of scripture that some of these have lifted. Which is why I’m seriously reevaluating my initial decision to leave the Catholic Church. On the other hand I don’t believe I would be “saved” had it not been for protestant intervention into my life. I definately would not have study scripture to the level I have. I’ve made the rounds of protestant theology and found them lacking at certain points on the other hand. They seem to get the main point. Believe in Jesus. Study the word. Live a life honoring to God. It’s departures from this protestant theoligy starts breaking down and we get to weird extreems. Authority is an issue. I understand now more than before why Catholics accuse Protestants of being their own Popes. Authority ultimately stops with each christian under protestant theology. And often personal preferences becomes “Gods Revelation” Such as no musical instruments in church, or shouting and convulsing in services, or some say you may divorce others say not. Calvanism vs. Armenianism. ect… Yeah I have a problem of the authority issue when it comes to protestantism. I’m really struggling here. However, I want to be obediant and not lead myself or family astray so I want to be clear of the things I believe.

I recommend that you start by reading on these topics in th eCAF library, then do a “search” of threads where they are addressed. I think your doubts place you in need of more study.👍

Janet S,

Thanks for the informed info about catholic doctrine…however you still didnt answer my question…of all of what you are saying is true how do we line up Paul’s teachings to the churches in which he started? I personally feel that this is why we have such majpr issues right now in the church…too much of the world has been allowed in! The Apostle John also said so…in his writings. From what I have read in the Didache and so far Justyn Martyr, this was repeated by them as well. Mind you this was early first century church! so where did the church gain the right…to change scripture? Jesus said Himself…THOSE who love me will obey my commands. Another words will do what I say…
I know there are always going to be sinners and people in serious sin…however as the church grows and ages this should have been the abnormal…not the norm…This is one reason I feel the catholic chucrh has such a major issue with child sex scandals, and it was really bad here wherer I live…by KNOWING and allowing this to continue without any consequences to those inolved…here? some of these were known about and the bishop just moved them to another school INSTEAD of dealing with this harshly…which brings me back to my point exactly…1 Cor 5;11,12.
Psalm 1 even talks about walking with ungodly people and such…that is OT, Paul is setting up the church doctrine and leadership according to the gospel, and according to his encounter with Jesus and relying on the Holy Spirit as his guide.
AGain I think the church is far to lax in their interpretation of the gospel…that is in particular this area.

Sambos 671,
Thanks for the info as well. I will be most honest with you…when I had to do a study of the Corinthian church and the crete’s? My frist thoughts were …this sounds the catholic church that I see. and his warning to them was so strong and yes he even warned them that they were in grave danger of not going to heaven BECAUSE of what they were doing! Anyway I am loving the reading of the early church fathers…plus some other things as well…thanks for all of your suggestions. It just is so important to find out what is the basis of what you believe…now I also realize we MUST receive by faith! Isnt it in Hebrews where Paul says …we must beleive by faith…and God is the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him anyway thanks again and God Bless…

Protestant <> Sola Scriptura

There is a wide variety of perspective in Protestantism, including also prima scriptura.

I do recommend getting hold of a Mark Stromm book called ‘Reframing Paul’ for great insight on Paul’s leadership thinking too.

Thank you Deborahssong,
I always appreciate your encouragement. Just for your information I’m reading a book by David Bivin on the Jewish context of Jesus life called “New Light on the Difficult Words of Jesus Insights from his Jewish Context” as well as an English Translation of the Qumran Dead Sea Scrolls. I’ve Started the Major works of Anselm while continuing to read Ireaneaus “On Appostolic Tradition” And I’ve Just received the 1st volume on his Against Heresies. Yeah I read several books at once. I’m still finishing the book “Born Fundalmentalist Born Again Catholic” and though the book has been great so far I found one issue at this point. He talks about the seat of Moses as being the Oral tradition of interpreting the Torah. Maybe it was understood that way in Jesus’ day. However, he states that Moses’ seat could not be located in scripture. I disagree with that. In Exodus Moses seat was his judgement authority over the Isrealites as he was they final (supreme court) for legal decisions in his community. In fact, Jethro asked him to appoint people to help him judge becuase he obviously couldn’t do it all himself and Moses’ agreed to it. The seat of Moses’ was a judgement seat on settling arguments.

Herbert,
I understand Prima Scriptura (Scriptures First). However, I have a problem with how do you rate other items in significance to authority. This is often used as a basis for continuing revelation from the Holy Spirit as a source of authority. This can easily be misleading since I can’t agree that a single person has properly conveyed the intention of the Holy Spirit based on their statement alone. Scripture says that we must judge prophesy against accuracy and scriptures. However, if I have a faulted view of scriptures to begin with how is that going to help me with something I believe the Holy Spirit told me. Many people have been lead astray by this thinking. There must be something authoritative to give me a firm basis in scripture. Reason? Common sence? Much to contemplate.

Sometimes I think the Church is too merciful too, and accepts too much mischief from dissenters, but then I have to remember that I’m not the Pope. I have to trust the Church even though I personally agree with a lot of what you say. It has always been the Church’s policy to forgive, even the most unforgivable sins. That’s why I brought up the example of the Donatists

Still, it is a balancing act between God’s mercy and his justice. If all the sinners are kicked out of the Church, who will be left? Even Paul admits he is a sinner.

Great insght! Listen were you contemplating leaving the catholic church? and what challenegd you to do this in depth search…listen this searching can be over whelming! If I allowed it? I would be in books and articles irhgt now 24-7! My husbadn says ot me what are you studying so deeply? I have shared with him what I am doing. He too was raised catholic. I left the church first then he did. HOwever we have had talks aout going back…several years ago. Oh can he sing! He was a praise and worship leader and does solos. Has such an awesome voice! anyway…this researching is awesome and time consuming. However I just really want to do the right thing! according to God!
My children had a fit last year when i went to a charismatic mass. You would have thought I had made a terrible mistake. They were both baptized in catholic church as babies…my daughter went to kindergarten in catholic school, however they both belong to protestant churches aswell. What i am finding out …it is so important to find out about something before you say you know.
I realize Peter was considered the first leader, or Pope…but where does the history say…that Roman catholic is the first church…though I guess I can see in the didache how the church was set up…but is it that plain and I am missing it? First church was Jewish, then of course gentile…where did it change and also where can I find some good reading about the reformation…anyway God Bless keep up the great work of searching…

Deborahssong,
I left the Catholic church when I was 17. I was raised a Catholic by marginal Catholics. In my experience there was no one accept the clergy living a christian life. I ended up in Africa and met real christians specifically missionaries. I saw that they lived their faith and interested me into really having a relationship with Jesus. Up to then Church was a matter of ritual. My faith was no more than a computer program. Where I memorized the right things and did the right things but my life wasn’t changed and God was a distant uncomprehendible thing that boring clergy members found interesting. Missionaries opened a new world of God interacting with man through his Son and the Word. I could be born again by really believing. I could know by reading scriptures. My life was changed. I no longer was bound to my sin and could rise above it and challenge it not to do it through the power of the Holy Spirit living in me. I didn’t leave the church right away. I tried to commune with God through the Sacrements but they seemed dead. I listened intently to sermons of the Priest and heard no more than social commentary no different than one could hear on Oprah. The stuff of Jesus seemed absent. Perishoners did not think about Jesus through the week and little old ladies put more emphasis on Mary than Jesus. I read the Scripture and Mary points to Jesus. In fact, living the word was life changing. Not habitual prayer. Prayer without meaning, but with meaning. Then I asked questions like why should I say more hail marys than our fathers as penance? The Nuncio after my confirmation, I was 15 at the time, (after great statements of faith) offered me my choice of Alcohol beverage afterwards. I asked myself ( I declined by the way) get confirmed and then blitzed? The moral life style seemed dimmished in the Church. I asked about authority and it seemed only scriptures could be trusted. I mean what about the veneration of the saints when we could go to the father directly. Remember, I was 17. Now as I’ve matured many years later and have more experience and understanding I’m thinking things over carefully as I study. Remember the Early Fathers. Their lives were changed dramatically by their faith. I don’t see this too much the Catholic Church. Plus when looking at the middle ages of the church what was this about killing people for differing from the church? I mean can you imagine Justin Martyr saying well if you don’t believe in the tenants of the Church you should be killed? No in fact the martyred saints said there where those who were killed without faith and were not part of the communion but don’t imagine that wished that on them. That what I thought then.

As far as spelling I’m worse than you. I don’t believe the priesthood initially purposely kept the bible out of peoples hands. However, most people were iliterate and uneducated. Bibles were expensive to copy ( a lot of man hours) and only the clergy (who could read and not everyone of them) and wealthy nobles could even afford to get a copy for themselves. However, there was a point were the clergy determined that the commoner was incapable of understanding scripture due to there lack of education and so kept it from the masses. They also kept close watch on the nobles to prevent heresy.
Most people could not read or write them, so Bibles had to be read aloud during the Liturgy of the Word. A Bible had to be copied by hand by monks working for 7 months from dawn to dusk, costing the equivalent of 300K today. No wonder why Bibles have to be kept under lock and key! They were stolen for money them. In my opinion modern protestantism would have been imposible without the print.
And the Cathari heresy started to copy “Bibles” in their own “translation” like the New Weird Translation of the JW. Since the Cathari where a real treat to the medieval order, Kings in France and Spain started to ban the private possesion of Bibles in the 1200s that were not approved by a Bishop (the nihil obstat).

Hi Sambos

I agree that people (especially recently) have perhaps placed too much weight on personal revelation (perhaps interpretation would be a more accurate term).

I think that we can easily go on tangents through both accumulated tradition - building and reinforcing itself - and individual interpretation of scripture.

I find particular enjoyment in the work of Christian historians, lexigraphers (correct term?..lexicologists?) and the like. Some of the beauty of it all is being able to follow the discussion from historians with different strengths, all bringing their own expertise to the discussions.

For example, I think NT Wright’s contribution to early church studies has been invaluable.

Sambos 671,
Code:
Amen! I mean I could not have put that any better myself! I mean that is it.... bingo! Now I am also by researching, finding out differnt things that resemble the catholic church....however I am still not sure.......
Yet, in my heart I am drawn and yet I am not. what is up with that? I study and then come across something that alarms me, then I cease the study and first thing I know......I am drawn back to the study! I do not beleive that this is my flesh driving this search. However I am sometimes overwhelemed by the drawing.....
I also beleive that we here in western culture are so sidetracked with STUFF that is why we sometimes just cannot see what missionaries in other countries have seen. Most of these countries have so little to distract them and we have so much that draws us away from our living God! anyway so where are you now in your search? Are you going back? and what is the avenue of your drawing? Thanks so much and God Bless...

I’m still teatering on the balance. There are many questions floating around in my mind. There is a question posed in the book we’ve mentioned before (BFBAC) which is this “Has the Church that Jesus built on Peter gone astray that the best option was to leave it?” I’m struggling with that one! I try to imagine the world without the reformation. Where would christianity be? Better off? I’m not so sure. More to the point: I don’t think so. However, I cannot deny the presence in the Eucharist anymore and there’s the authority. Then there is real life experience which makes me continue to question the RCC. What if the Secularist took over the church during the middleages what then. I mean the pharasees were the orthodox authority in Jesus day and he didn’t contridict a lot of what they said just how they practiced their faith. Do we have the same issues today? Or during Martin Luther’s life? Questions for both side plague me.

The Pharisees were the most popular Jewish denomination on Jesus times but the control of the Temple was done by the Zadokites (Saducees). They were the main authority. The Sanedrim was a uneasy alliance between the two. The plot to kill Jesus was a Zadokite one. The Pharisees might have disagree with Jesus on many things but never would have gone as far to try to kill him.
About Luther and the Reformation. I think that the best observation was the one by if I remember Erasmus. “You are supposed to reform the Church not to destroy her”. Or that the Eastern Orthodox; " The protestants threw the Baby with the water."
Or that of Nieztche that blames the begining of the death of the Christian West on Luther. I think that a good schism would have force a reformation of a Chuch that was ill adapted to the new urban protocapitalistic Europe. Instead the mistake was open the gates for a profound doctrinal revision that even touched the Bible.
I think Sola Scriptura was a disaster and so the canon changes. It opened the whole Bible to criticism. “Look they all read the same book and cannot make their minds on the meaning. So much for being God breathed. Why their God is so obtuse when a missreading can send the reader to Hell? Look for 1500 years they had some books in the Bible that are not inspired anymore, what else is wrong in the Bible?”. The flood gates for atheism and agnosticism were opened never to close again. The brutal religion wars gave the religion foes a reason to blame religion for the ills of Europe, the atheists said that only religion made good people to do very bad things.
The demise of Christianity was in motion.

To be fair, most atheists I’ve talked to found plenty wrong with the Catholic Church even before the Inquisitions - their main criticisms of Christians are not over theological differences between branches.

However, I thought both Pharisees and Saducees sat in the Sanhedrin. Also Jesus said that the Pharisees “sit in Moses’ seat”. Why wouldn’t the Pharisees want to see Jesus killed? I mean we see Paul at the stoning of Stephen and the rabble laid their cloaks at his feet. He also goes on a persecution spree of Christians. He calls himself a Pharisee of Pharisees. As far as the Reformation, the Church was pulling itself apart long before! I mean there were 3 Popes at once! Orders were at each others throats! The Reformation was a natural child of print (as you’ve suggested), and of reason. Unfortunately, the church’s involvement in politics allowed for power hungry people to see the church as a means to obtain privilage (the church then the congress today). I think the inquisition would have occured without the protestants. Think of the excuse the spanish used to eliminate their Jewish population. It was a terrible time in general both Catholics and Protestants were to blame. However, the protestants encouraged the masses to study scripture for themselves. To know the word provided by God. As far as the apochryphal writing, well protestants didn’t entirely do away with it until the 1800’s. They just didn’t believe it to be Cannon. In other words, they agreed with the early Jewish scholars who “cannonized” their scriptures at the end of the 1st century. No debate there! New Testiment was universally accepted. However, I agree there is good information in the apocryphal works of the old testiment.

I made my last post in a rush. I forgot to mention that the Early Fathers did consider the entire Septuigent to be the inspired word of God which included the apocryphal books. You can see that
Clement quotes from the book of Tobit. However, how much of the apocryphal books are quoted in the New Testiment?
I picked up a copy of the CAB catholic study bible and found it to be a very good source for study. However, I was concerned that some of the articles in the first part seem to indicate that the Old Testiment was a creation of the Post exilic Jews and only certain sections of the Torah was writen earlier in the Monarchy period very possibly not even during Moses’ time! The reason I bring it up is that the protestants questioned how scripture was understood and believed it to be inerrant however these articles question whether the bible is authentic within itself. Such as: were insidents mentioned in the Torah actually happen as stated? I’m not sure I agree with the JEDP theory of the sources for translation. This view may permit significant error in early scriptural translation. How can this be when the scriptures are believed to be revealed, inspired, inerrant, and connonical? It seems to me the validity of scriptures are questioned here. I’m just rambling my thoughts.
