Early Christmas Gift

My grandma sent me my Christmas package this weekend, and I already opened it! Inside was a hand-made card (she’s been making them for years), a generous check and a few other gifts: a cute, wooden manger scene, some hideous purple ruffley socks, and a book called “God’s Story”. The purple socks I expected, the book I did not. It was short, so I read it that morning.

It didn’t take long for me to realize this was a Jewish children’s book. Probably for ages 8-9. The illustrations were pretty neat and it was only subtly Jewish – one a quote from a rabbi in the beginning. I’m reading the first few pages thinking okay, maybe Grandma wants me to have this for my future children? The book is an overview of the well-known stories from the Old Testament. I didn’t particularly love how the author explained each main character’s (including God’s) inner thoughts, but whatever. The book ended with a short paragraph about how people all over the world can’t agree on who God is and which stories are true. Then it continues [verbatim] “Some people are still waiting for the messiah. Some people think the messiah has already come. Who knows? Only God.”

I appreciate the effort, I really do, but I’m not going to keep this book. Mom said Grandma probably found the book in the “bargain bin” and purchased it for me without reading it. My mom is wise. As always, I plan to write my grandma and thank her for all her generous gifts after the holidays!

What do you guys expect to get for the holidays?

Well, I know what I’m getting from DH… I just don’t know the little gifts that will be in my stocking…

I’m getting a pink jersey for my college team, some brown boots, and some perfume.

From my parents and one set of grandparents, I’ll probably get money and maybe a Netflic subscription. We’ll probably end up using most of the money on stuff for the baby in a month or two.

I’m guessing that I’ll get a sweater from my best friend here in Korea - she asked what I wanted and I suggested a sweater or socks. She told me where to buy socks on sale, so I’m guessing I’ll get a sweater from her!

My boyfriend will be giving me my gift late - about a month late, when I visit him in the Philippines. I’m so excited to see him! Even if he didn’t get me anything, it’d be wonderful just to spend a weekend with him and meet his family! But I suspect I’ll get a piece of jewelry. As usual, I’d love it to be an engagement ring, but I’ll be happy no matter what it is, or even nothing at all.

My parents told me they’d deposit a little something into my bank account. Most likely, it’ll be a hundred bucks or so, but I haven’t asked how much. I’d be delighted if my grandmother did the same, but I’m not going to ask her either. I sure could use the money, but if Christmas comes and goes and my bank account stays as empty as it is now, I’ll ask my boss for an advance.

I’d give anything for a phone call from the Cleveland clinic for my friend who is in need of a small bowel transplant, on top of a liver and pancreas transplant due to Crohn’s.

I’d also like to be in remission w/my Crohn’s and for everyone here on CAF who is in need of a special prayer or miracle, that they get it.
