I searched all over the place, but I couldn’t find anything. Besides St. Augustine, what other Church fathers (preferably before Augustine) wrote about Original Sin?

Jurgens breaks down “Original Sin” into several components. This is from only the first volume, which covers pre-Nicene and Nicene-era Fathers:
  • Our first parents, having fallen into grave sin, lost their original justice (3 citatioins)
  • Death is an effect of Adam’s sin (9 citations)
  • Through his sin, Adam lost other free gifts (3 citations)
  • But, in spite of his fall, Adam retained his free will (3 citations)
  • The sin of Adam was passed on to all men (16 citations)
Which aspect are you asking about?

Well, would it be too much to say all of it? Though I do specifically refer to the sin of Adam which passed on to all men. That is more precise.

Yeah.

OK, I will list those. If you want to read the text, I suggest you buy the book (it’s only, like, $14).
  • St. Irenaeus, Against Heresies (3 citations)
  • Tertullian, The Testimony of the Soul [3,2]
  • Tertullian, Against Marcion [5,1,1]
  • Origin, Homilies on Jeremias [Hom 8, 1]
  • Origin, Homilies on Leviticus [Hom. 8,3]
  • Origin, Commentaries on Romans [3,8]
  • St. Cyprian of Carthage (my favorite ECF!), Letter to Fidus [64 (59), 5]
  • St. Peter of Alexandria, On Chastity [3,6]
  • Aphraates the Persian Sage, Treatises [6,14], [7,1], [23,3]
  • St. Ephraim, Hymns of the Epiphany [10,1]
  • St. Athanasius, Discourses against the Arians [1, 51]
  • St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures [13,1]

This is a stale thread, but I happened to do a search on original sin today and found this it. I know many Christians do not accept sprinkling as a valid way of baptizing, only immersion, so that’s what got me searching.

I also found this web site, which might be helpful:
On the doctrine of Original Sin - ECF’s
It is a discussion site. The O.P. cites 12 ECF’s.

Peace,
Mimi

The really funny thing is that protestants (mostly) view Baptism as a merely symbolic act. So I don’t know how they can get all exercised over how it is done. How can a symbolic act have (or lack) validity?

The other funny thing is that Catholics have more regard for (most) protestant Baptisms than they do!

They dismiss their Baptisms as symbols, but Catholics accept their Baptisms as real.

Eastern Fathers who Taught Original Sin Before Augustine (And Western Ones)

Re: that link

I get the “before Augustine” point. There were other ECF’s before Augustine to teach about original sin. I don’t get the point about Eastern Fathers taught OS before Western Fathers,

when

Earliest Western name that was listed began with Pope Clement I ( 3rd pope 1st century)
Earliest Eastern name that was listed began with Origen ( 185 - 232)

Even Justin Martyr who was listed was before Origin,

I’m just sayin 😉

Perhaps the title is misleading. It’s not intended to imply that the Eastern Fathers wrote about original sin before the western Fathers did, but only that they both wrote about original sin before Augustine did. Sorry for the confusion.

It’s not your fault, it’s that link that was confusing on that point, not you.

Of course, as far as I can tell, all the Fathers taught everyone needed baptismal grace/regeneration for salvation, even those not guilty of actual sin. This is just stating the doctrine on original sin in a different way. If you need to obtain grace for salvation, it means you lack that grace.
