I searched all over the place, but I couldn’t find anything. Besides St. Augustine, what other Church fathers (preferably before Augustine) wrote about Original Sin?
Well, would it be too much to say all of it? Though I do specifically refer to the sin of Adam which passed on to all men. That is more precise.Jurgens breaks down “Original Sin” into several components. This is from only the first volume, which covers pre-Nicene and Nicene-era Fathers:
Which aspect are you asking about?
- Our first parents, having fallen into grave sin, lost their original justice (3 citatioins)
- Death is an effect of Adam’s sin (9 citations)
- Through his sin, Adam lost other free gifts (3 citations)
- But, in spite of his fall, Adam retained his free will (3 citations)
- The sin of Adam was passed on to all men (16 citations)
Yeah.Well, would it be too much to say all of it?
OK, I will list those. If you want to read the text, I suggest you buy the book (it’s only, like, $14).Though I do specifically refer to the sin of Adam which passed on to all men. That is more precise.
The really funny thing is that protestants (mostly) view Baptism as a merely symbolic act. So I don’t know how they can get all exercised over how it is done. How can a symbolic act have (or lack) validity?I know many Christians do not accept sprinkling as a valid way of baptizing, only immersion

Eastern Fathers who Taught Original Sin Before Augustine (And Western Ones)

Perhaps the title is misleading. It’s not intended to imply that the Eastern Fathers wrote about original sin before the western Fathers did, but only that they both wrote about original sin before Augustine did. Sorry for the confusion.Re: that link
I get the “before Augustine” point. There were other ECF’s before Augustine to teach about original sin. I don’t get the point about Eastern Fathers taught OS before Western Fathers,
when
Earliest Western name that was listed began with Pope Clement I ( 3rd pope 1st century)
Earliest Eastern name that was listed began with Origen ( 185 - 232)
Even Justin Martyr who was listed was before Origin,
I’m just sayin![]()
It’s not your fault, it’s that link that was confusing on that point, not you.Perhaps the title is misleading.
