Fielding opinions as to what book(s) I should read on the subject. Hefty reading, I am sure!!
And, as one new to the subject, I am hoping there is an overview of sorts with which to start. Don’t want to start with highly detailed text books just yet!

Thank you with blessings…

The Fathers Know Best by Jimmy Akin. I am not finished yet, but it is an excellent book about the early Church 🙂

I’ve heard great things about Akin’s book. “Faith of the Early Fathers” is a three volume set compiled by William Jurgens, an indispensable resource. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I don’t know if this would interest you: scripturecatholic.com It contains Scriptures and Church Father quotes for different Catholic teachings and it is free. 😉
Free is good right now, as I have no money; and as long as my pc lasts!!! Thank you!!
Looking forward to a time when I can buy books again. Library has NOTHING…
Thanks again

Since you said not too detailed for now, I recommend these.
  • The Fathers Know Best
    Jimmy Akin
  • Mary and the Fathers of the Church: The Blessed Virgin Mary in Patristic Thought
    Luigi S. M. Gambero
  • The Early Church (The Penguin History of the Church) (v. 1)
    Henry Chadwick
  • The Spirit of Early Christian Thought: Seeking the Face of God
    Robert Louis Wilken
  • Four Witnesses: The Early Church in Her Own Words
    Rod Bennett
If you are looking to get more detailed later down the road, I suggest this.
  • Faith of the Early Fathers – Volumes 1-3
    William A. Jurgens
And finally, if you are looking to go all in, I suggest the series below. However, I urge some caution as these include the Fathers taking positions which were later shown to be wrong, so you should be a bit careful when reading them so that you know which is which.
  • Ante-Nicene Fathers, The Writings of the Fathers down to A.D. 325 – Volumes 1-10
    Phillip Schaff
  • Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series 1 (St. Augustine) – Volumes 1-8
    Phillip Schaff
  • Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series 1 (St. Chrystostom) – Volumes 9-14
    Phillip Schaff
  • Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series 2 – Volumes 1-14
    Phillip Schaff
Peace,

Since you said not too detailed for now,
Thank you so much. I am so pleased with the responses… You did say the last one was detailed; you were not kidding! I did join, though; will start with the less detailed, as you suggested. Thank you!! 😃 😃 😃

No problem. I hope it helps. If you have to get just one, I would suggest the Four Witnesses book, as that is very good. These look good also, but I don’t have them so I cannot comment for sure.
