So Eric, are you now an infallible interpreter of Ineffabilis Deus?Ok, here is the official form (i.e., the summary near the end of the document):
“We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.”
First of all, let me point out an error in your interpretation of this document. Contrary to what you seem to be saying in your critique, Ineffabilis Deus does not say that all the nuances of this definition have been “constantly believed” throughout the history of Christianity. The term is used in the future tense: “…to be believed and constantly”. In other words, this definition is to be held as doctrine forever more. But what the document does say is that the core belief of the sinless nature of Mary is something that has been historically believed.
I mean I know that you admittedly practice Biblical eisegesis, but Encyclical eisegesis too?
What does this mean exactly?
Are we talking Newman’s acorns here? I mean it sure appears that Pope Pius IX seems to be certain of what “this doctrine” consists of.this doctrine always existed in the Church as a doctrine that has been received from our ancestors, and that has been stamped with the character of revealed doctrine.
I mean, there’s no mention of “well, you only see some folks that seemed to think that Mary was sinless in some ambiguous sense for a long time, while others even men of great renown including some Popes claiming otherwise. But we have the full revelation now”.
