Does anyone have any documents on what the early Church Fathers said about Mary Magdaelene?

Thanks you.

Am curious to see as well if others will chime in as to the Early Church fathers views on Mary Magdalen as I love her very much! Sorry this wasn´t the response you were seeking but I will look at my volumes to see if I find anything.

God bless 😃

The Eastern Churches believe that she retired to Ephesus with the Blessed Virgin and died there. French maintain the tradition that she went to Marseilles with her brother Lazarus, who accordingly was the first bishop of that province.

The Church Father Jerome said of Saint Mary Magdalene:

“…Those unbelievers who read me may perhaps smile to find me lingering over the praises of weak woman. But if they recall how holy women attended our Lord and Savior and ministered to him of their own substance, and how the three Marys stood before the cross, and particularly how Mary of Magdala, called “of the tower” because of her earnestness and ardent faith, was privileged to see the rising Christ even before the apostles, they will convict themselves of pride rather than me of folly, who judge virtue not by the sex but by the mind…”
  • Saint Jerome, 347 – 420

I am Eastern Orthodox, and I have always been taught the opposite of what I have heard that the Latins believe about Mary the Magdalene. If I am correct the Latins believe that she was a prostitute who was converted by Jesus after He cast seven Demons from her. The Orthodox teach that she was always a holy woman, and that the seven demons tormented her for this. Let us also understand that she was the first evangelist; having preached Christ’s Ressurection to His Apostles. The tradition of the Orthodox having red eggs for Pascha is also attributed to her, but there are different accounts as to why the egg is red. If you notice in Orthodox icons of the Madgalene she is normally shown holding a red egg. Does anyone know the story as to why the egg was red?

That is interesting, OrthodoxJosh… do you see her as the same woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with the perfume? Because that woman was described as being sinful. Of course, whether or not she was sinful, St Mary Magdalene later became a great Saint. I read that Angels would appear to her and she saw Heaven.

Current Western instructions for the feast of Saint Mary Magdalene state that she, the woman who washed and anointed Jesus’ feet, and Mary of Bethany are to be regarded as separate individuals.

On the other hand there are feast days for Saint Martha and Saint Lazarus, but none for Mary of Bethany.

I have thought that Saint Martha resembles the elder son and Mary the Prodigal - strictly imagination on my part.

That is not true.

Neither Scripture, Tradition, nor The Church has ever taught she was a prostitute.

The skull of the Magdalene at St Maximin in France

Her cult in the south of France believe she traveled by boat there and lived her final years as a hermit. Local legend, so I’m not sure how the Church would comment. There may be more, but I’ve never looked into it.

Ha ha. I was about to post this.

Thank you for educating me on something that I had been mislead to believe!🙂

I put this mistaken belief (which many have) down to Pope Gregory the Great voicing his personal opinion that she was a prostitute. He had nothing to support his opinion. When a Pope says something many think that means it is a Church teaching which of course is not correct when he is expressing personal opinions.

I recall hearing a claim that Lazarus, Martha and Mary of Bethany all went in a boat to France. Is this the same story, making Mary Magdalene and Mary of Bethany the same? Or does this make her a separate person going to France alone?

Also, remember the tradition that Lazarus went to Cyprus and became the first bishop there. I wonder how many of these “traditions” sprung up so that bishops of certain dioceses could clain some kind of pseudo-apostolic tradition for their bishopric? Isn’t the fact that they were made a bishop by the laying on of hands of more than one bishop who had already been raised to that rank by someone already in apostolic succession enough? (I don’t know if the cannon stating that it must be more than one bishop laying his hands on another man to make him a bishop is just an eastern Orthodox Tradition or if the is Latin as well.)

I, in fact, do believe that she was the same woman who annointed the feet of our Blessed Saviour. You do bring up a good point that I had failed to put two and two together. I pray that St. Mary the Magdalene would pray for us all, and forgive me for my ignorance about her. May she, together with the All-Holy Mother of God pray to Christ that our souls may be saved!🙂
