Hello everyone,

I decided to post my question here, because it seems that the people who post here (both Catholic & Orthodox) have read the Early Church Fathers. I haven’t read them myself, but really would like to correct this. So can anyone here tell me where to start and possibly provide some free online texts - if possible I’d like something translated by a Catholic (either eastern or western) or at least something with very few “notes”.

One of the texts I’m interested in is the Didache.

New Advent has a fairly extensive collection.

Otherwise, I’m not quite sure what to recommend. I’ve seen a book called, “Early Christian Writings” which has a fair selection of texts fro the Apostolic Fathers, and is going for $11.20 at Amazon, which isn’t bad. I can’t vouch for how good it is, though. It will be cheaper than the Loeb classic editions of the Fathers by far, although it has less selection (but obviously would be far less scholarly).

I don’t recommend Jurgens, Faith of the Early Fathers, because that’s a reference book, not something you can sit down and read.

I would second the volumes by Jurgens - even though they’re not online. You can look for single volumes and buy them one at a time used if your budget won’t allow the complete cost. Or, check them out from the library to try them before you buy.
