Some of our Eastern brothers and sisters have suggested that indulgences were introduced in the Latin Church only after the schism. In a secular history book I’m currently reading, it is stated that Pope John VIII (872-82) offered indulgences (remission of temporal penalties) to all those who fought to defend Italy and the Papal States against Muslim invaders. Any thoughts?
