No. Just as tattoos of themselves aren’t sinful, or makeup or fancy (decorative) clothing or jewellery, neither are piercings.

All these things can become sinful depending on the intent and purpose as well as the extent. Piercings of the genitalia, for example, which are primarily designed for purposes of sexual attractiveness.

Really? I rather think that would have the opposite effect for me. Not that I know this from personal experience.

I mean I think I would find others with such piercings less attractive. Not that I think such piercings would make me less attractive to others. Although that’s probably true too. Oh, never mind!

whooooah there doggy!

Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD” Leviticus 19:28

Now Im usually the first to say that leviticus rules are a loada **** cause you can look at the preaching of and message of Chriist and interpret loads of them as being rendered obsolete (i.e. food laws in Mark etc, as well as loads of references that we arent bound by the old laws Galatians 3:23-25 etc)

But as far as I know there is no NT references to tatoo’s. . . I myself wanna get one but am unsure whether to or not in light of this. . .It is a self arguement that I keep coming back to

but it really isnt that clear cut

Are you of the opinion that we should maintain all the old laws, unless specifically mentioned in the NT? This was the subject of the very first council of the Church. The council came out the other way, we don’t hold to the old law. Its right there in Acts 15 and in Galatians.

I suppose it depends on your interpretation and what Old Laws still apply…

“This one will say, ‘I am the LORD’s,’ another will call himself by the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’ and surname himself by the name of Israel.”
-Isaiah 44:5

“Behold, I have graven you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.”
-Isaiah 49:16

“Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the brand marks of Jesus.”
-Galatians 6:17

I personally have two ear piercings and four tattoos, one of my children, one of my wife, one with the Serenity Prayer and one that I designed with Christian imagery (thorn armband with sacred heart shaped in thorns containing a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit, Alpha/Omega design, Crucifix with ‘INRI’, IXOYE inside of fish, with clouds and rays of light…very beautiful). Each represents family and love of God to me.

I love that I have adorned my body with artwork that displays my love for Jesus, just as I love my Cruciform necklace and rosary beads. My tattoos are in no way meant to display a ‘rebellious’ attitude, they are pieces of art that reflect my most beloved possessions, my faith, my family and my sobriety.

The earrings on the other hand…that’s more the ‘rock and roll’ in me.

I believe the Leviticus passage refers to rituals that people would perform at funerals, where they would mutiliate themselves. Obviously, if someone is getting a tattoo for the purpose of mutilating themselves, that’s wrong…it really comes to what you are getting drawn on you and for what reason, imo.

How’s that poly-cotton shirt fit you (Lev. 19:19)?

‘Cutting your bodies for the dead’ was practiced by the Canaanites as ancestor worship, which clearly contradicted the whole ‘I am your God, thou shalt have no other gods before me’ thing; and tattoos in that place and time marked slaves. That’s why those were forbidden for the Israelites, not because people are not allowed to decorate the temples of the holy spirit (I suppose the Shakers might disagree with me, but, well… 😛 )

Also, rare meat or even meat not properly drained of blood was not allowed in the Old Testament. Many of the rules of that time period make sense when you look at surrounding tribal practices. Not marking yourself for the dead was to keep the Hebrews from associating themselves with cults who worshipped the dead. We don’t have that problem today.

If the OT was written today, we would probably be told not to do things like associate ourselves with some New Age practices.

I hope not too…as I have poerced ears myself.
Kathy
Styles change so quickly now. At one point people merely got their ears pierced. Now they get them poerced:p

My fingers slip when I am typing quickly too, but I couldn’t resist teasing you.😃
