What does the church thing about dinosars? they were around 160 million years ago and this happend. news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100304/sc_nm/us_dinosaurs_asteroid my qustion is, if God put humans on the earth by the end of the week of the very first few days of the earth…ummm were humans around when dinosaurs were two? or does the church teach that the earth was not literly made in 7 days but thats only a metaphore or something? if theres anything in the bible that i find contradicting , its this…what do you think?

From what I understand, the Church does NOT teach the literal reading of the creation story. The church does NOT ask us to believe in a literal “one week, 7 calendar” creation.

Leave science to investigate science. Science tells us something very important, religion does as well.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE

3:8. But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Remember what is time in God’s eye? Does God have the same second, minutes, hours,Months Years, standard as we do? A second in our time could be a 1,000 years in God’s eye!

Or Perhaps

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS

2:7. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, a wisdom which is hidden, which God ordained before the world, unto our glory:

2:8. Which none of the princes of this world knew. For if they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.

2:9. But, as it is written: That eye hath not seen, nor ear heard: neither hath it entered into the heart of man, what things God hath prepared for them that love him.

2:10. But to us God hath revealed them by his Spirit. For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

2:11. For what man knoweth the things of a man, but the spirit of a man that is in him? So the things also that are of God, no man knoweth, but the Spirit of God.

2:12. Now, we have received not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit that is of God: that we may know the things that are given us from God.

2:13. Which things also we speak: not in the learned words of human wisdom, but in the doctrine of the Spirit, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

2:14. But the sensual man perceiveth not these things that are of the Spirit of God. For it is foolishness to him: and he cannot understand, because it is spiritually examined.

The sensual man - the spiritual man… The sensual man is either he who is taken up with sensual pleasures, with carnal and worldly affections; or he who measureth divine mysteries by natural reason, sense, and human wisdom only. Now such a man has little or no notion of the things of God. Whereas the spiritual man is he who, in the mysteries of religion, takes not human sense for his guide: but submits his judgment to the decisions of the church, which he is commanded to hear and obey. For Christ hath promised to remain to the end of the world with his church, and to direct her in all things by the Spirit of truth.

2:15. But the spiritual man judgeth all things: and he himself is judged of no man.

2:16. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

The official position of the Church is that the Bible is true but that it is not a science book, and the truth of the creation stories (there are several in the Bible) is not meant to be a recipe book for making a world, or even a play-by-play delineation of how this one was made.

As Catholics we are not obligated to believe that the “days” described in Genesis are meant to be 24-hour “days,” nor even that they describe 7 periods of time of equal length. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the words are metaphoric or symbolic, just that you have to take them in context. The human mind to whom God revealed this had to use human language to describe it-and in a way that it could be remembered and passed down orally for many, many generations.

BUT - and this is a huge BUT -

If you step back from trying to read it literally and read the 7-day story as a lyrical, poetic retelling, it is remarkable how well this ancient story fits with what modern science has found to be true: it’s as if God had showed someone (Abraham? Moses?) time-lapse photography of Creation, beginning with nothingness, then a sudden flash of energy, the gradual coalescing of the heavenly bodies, the cooling of the earth and the appearance of liquid water, the rise of continents with the corrollary containment of the water in seas - and then the order of the appearances of life forms, first in the sea, just a science tells us it must have been, and gradually moving on to land and into the air . . . eventually culminating in the life form that could receive the Spirit and know the Creator.

As creation stories go, it follows the geological record nicely - which most of the creation stories of ancient cultures do not. So - maybe there is something to this revelation idea after all?

My understanding is that the earth was formed about 7 billion years ago when the moon split off of it and formed itself in orbit around us. Gradually as the waters and winds and earth crusts formed and settled down, life started to form in the oceans and then moved onto the earth, The earth became a land of green pastures and beautiful with fruits and berries growing to feed the new animals developing, evolving, onto the earth, as the land animals grew in stature, they soon dominated the land, eating all of the vegetations and then started to eat other animals too. These were the dionosars, they ruled the earth for many million of years… Almighty God and the Holy Spirit were responsible for these things happening here on earth as part of God’s plan for us. After the earth went into one of it geological transformations , the dionosars were completely destroyed and after millions of years have become our fausal fuel… All life wasn’t destroyed, many animals were spared.
As God developed these animals and the ‘‘cave’’ man too, at His time, He ‘‘transfigured’’ one or two ‘‘cave’’ men into the human species we are today. Our DNA is not the same as the DNA of the ''cave… man. The human being is totally different from the early animlals which resembled us.
Our Father started this in His own time approximately seven billion years ago. I may be wrong, it happened once before, just my thoughts.:):):):):)🙂

I agree that our holy bible is not a text book nor a history book. The Creation story was originally a beautiful poem, a song that the people prayed around the camp fires during their early existance. All of the stories were memorized and told to Moses who was educated and was able to actual write the jewish bible during their 40 year journey to the promised land.🙂

The Catholic Church invented the scientific method- a Catholic priest invented the big bang theory. The Church encourages science to reveal the secrets of God’s universe and His work of Creation.

The book of Genesis tells us why God created us, it is not intended to tell us how.

Mal: How? Random chance? You say the Moon simply broke away from the Earth and floated a certain distance away and then stopped? Do have any idea how implausible this is? Take for example the gravitational pull of the Moon and its influence on both weather patterns and the tides which of course have a dramatic influence on flora which of course then suport fauna. Or perhaps we can discuss how the existance of the optimal amount of soluble salt in the environment keeps at bay the development of yeast cultures which would dominate the environment if not in balance. Or perhaps the chemical makeup of breathable air which if overly oxygenated and not balanced by the unique inert materials contained therein would be highly combustable and flamable. Evolution is a flawed theory that is defended primarily by atheists. GOD created all the delicate balances present in nature. IMO - to deny this obvious fact is to take ones first steps towards atheism.

I agree with the big bang theory. The Holy Bible is a book of insprition and the climax of the story of salvation through Jesus Christ and His resurrection which promises us poor human beings eternal life too… The Bible is a book of hope
We are still expanding, our moon is leaving us at a minute or two each year. The rest of the story is when it stops and starts to colapse and come together again.:(:(:(:(:(:(:(😦

I see I am in the minority here, but I believe the literal 6 days. I don’t put too much stock in the “dating” process. Many young things date older than they should and old things date younger. I will find the specific examples and post them. Off the top of my head, trees in call date off of what science proves them to be age wise. Also, the dust on the moon should be greater if the moon existed long.
Lastly, immediately after the creation of man…to look at him, Adam would have looked maybe 30. But literally he would have only been moments old. My point is that there is reason to believe that it was 6 days and things aren’t as the appear. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I am not saying that one must believe it was 6 days( I don’t know if the Church says we must or not) but I know that I am allowed to accept as such.

So if nothing existed prior to the Big Bang - Who lit the fuse and what material did he light that was combustible?

This is how I view evolution and the Big Bang.

Take all the nuts and bolts and parts and fenders and cloth for the seats that make up an entire Automobile and then detonate any number of times. You cannot argue that all the raw materials are there. Is it plausible that an Automobile will emerge after any detonation? In fact - have you ever seen evidence of order following ANY EXPLOSION of matter by randomn chance and if so - demonstrate.

There is no evidence of either ever happening. There is not a single example of cross species evolution.

And how can nothing explode?

No matter how you slice it - there is ORDER in the universe. None of these theories prove the existance of that order by random chance which is the fulcrum of the theories themselves.

I’m no scientist, but I have heard that if the big bang was true then all the planets and moons would spin in the same direction, since the energy burst would have had one direction of effect. This is not the case with the planets and moons since some, albeit only a few, spin in opposite direction.

Mal: I too believe in the literal 6 days. The Church has taught this for Centuries. Original Sin is Dogma . And in addition - because not one of the naysayers has proven to me that GOD could not do it. I believe that GOD is omnipotent. Maybe others do not or have not come to that point of belief. But as we have seen from Scripture and the Teachings of Holy Mother the Church - Scripture is Spiritually Examined. Only the Church can dicern its interpretation. The Church has. I believe there is a reason that Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days as example to us. And we cannot have clarity for the Spiritual unles we develope our own Spirit. I refuse to believe my ancestors were apes or that everything came into existance from random chance. I believe in GOD and in Holy Mother the Church. And I believe that too many people try to read Scripture as if it were literature composed by man instead of the Word of GOD. So although Adam and Eve may appear to be foolishness in the eyes of the flesh and human reason or sensual interpretation solely - does it remain so when spiritually examined. Did GOD create the world in such a manner so as to confuse the proud? To make it implausible to the prideful? Was that his plan all along? I think we have to examine the entire Scriptures and the Proper Exegesis by Holy Mother the Church and even then how could any of us possibly form a private opinion to the contrary of what the Church has already taught. I think the denial of Adam and Eve is the result of that sensual interpretation spoken of by St Paul.

Faith in GOD. Its the Catholic Faith after all. Not every answer in the Natural World is going to be spelled out. GOD has given us that which is healthy to know for our own good. Should we then attempt to use reason in a faulty manner to the point of a loss of Faith or should we pray that our eyes be opened to the truths that matter for our salvation. The purpose of Scripture and the Mission of the Church is the Salvation of Souls. It isnt a novel and it isnt a history book. It is the Word of GOD unto Salvation in and through the Church.

Well put. Has all the makings a of new creed. lol

Pope Pius the 12th wrote on the evolution of man in 1950:

papalencyclicals.net/Pius12/P12HUMAN.HTM

To quickly summarize the encyclical, we must believe man’s soul was specially created by God, but the origin of his physical body is open to scientific opinion. Also we must believe all living peoples are descended from a single couple, Adam and Eve which partook in original sin and affected all their descendants. Outside that we are free as good Catholics to believe in otherwise naturalistic Evolution or 6 day creation or anywhere in between.

To Everyone, All Philosophical discussion aside, I think it was rather interesting that a Snake’s fossil was found with a egg in it’s mouth in a Dinosaur’s nest. Rather thought-provoking? Scott

Dinosaurs eggs in a snakes mouth is not really unexpected from a scientific point of view as snakes are known to have existed since dinosaur times. However, it is a really cool discovery none-the-less.

What is puzzling is how Tyranosaurus bones has soft tissue in them, when science expects all soft tissue to degrade after a few tens of thousands of years due to cosmic rays and other factors.

Perhaps all those dragons and behemoths mentioned in the Old Testament were more than just literary devices. (Note that the older english translations like the Douay Rheims and the King James have numerous references to dragons. Modern translations say ‘beasts of the field’, jackals, or the like)

I do not believe this at all! Life did not come from the sea! Humans and Animals do not evolve! If the earth was closer or further away from the Sun we would freeze or burn! The Moon controls the tides. I can not believe this all happened by accident or a “Big Bang”!

Why is our moon the only Moon in our Solar System not to Rotate? We see the same side all the time? It happened before??? When??? This sounds like what a Atheist would say?

I think when he said “it happened once before” he was making a joke about “I might be wrong.”

Catholics are free to believe in the literal 6 day creation, but not obligated to. But we are not free to believe that it all “just happened” randomly or without cause. We believe that God created all that is seen and unseen, that He ordered the universe and our place in it. Please don’t suggest that Catholics who do not accept a literal 6 day creation are rejecting God’s role in creation.
