It’s nice that this particular 25,000 mile circumference spherical ball of metal, water, minerals, and dirt managed to get its own day.

Mars didn’t get one. Neither did Venus or Jupiter. But hey, soon all the planets in the universe are going to be lobbying for their own special day.
Just out of curiosity, why are you against this. Did it mess up your day or something? It seems like we have a lot of silly such and such days. What’s so bad with this one?

Well, as Gam197 mentioned, the person who began Earth Day was a ZPG zealot. It has always seemed to me that people in that movement regarded human beings as rather a pollutant of the planet, which the planet would do so much better without. Conservation of the earth’s resources has been a valid concern for many for a lot longer than there has been an Earth Day. Earth Day sometimes seems to invoke a lot of subtle anti-Christian and anti-life propaganda. But as you say, we do have a lot of silly such days. Probably too many.

I definitely l cannot stand up for the nut that founded the day!😃 I have to say though, out of all the news I heard on TV, newspapers and internet I did not hear any anti-christian/ population control stuff. All I heard was stuff like better lite bulbs, planting a tree and stuff like that. The only place I heard anything negative about it was on conservative radio.

That’s interesting… makes me wonder why people would be negative about encouraging people to do stuff that can only help all of us… use better bulbs, plant trees etc

Duplicate-

Friday, April 24th, Al Gore is testifying today at a House Energy and Environment subcommittee hearing on climate change legislation, “The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.”
After three days of panels and testimony and more than 50 witnesses espousing on the nitty-gritty details of the 648-page draft, the grand finale on Friday will feature former Vice President Al Gore, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Virginia Sen. John Warner…
Gore says the legislation will simultaneously solve the problems of climate, economy and national security…
The draft bill calls for a 20 percent reduction from 2005 levels by 2020, and 83 percent by mid-century. It also would require utilities to produce a quarter of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025.
Maybe people get angry because of comments like this.

“(CNN) - Former Vice President Al Gore used Earth Day to criticize congressional Republicans for opposing President Obama’s agenda, and he called on donors to give to House Democrats as a way to help expand their majority in the 2010 elections.”

Or this - Dems refused to allow climate skeptic to testify
(Washington, DC) – A former science advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher says he has been uninvited to appear before a House Energy and Commerce hearing today on global warming.
Lord Christopher Monckton told “Climate Depot” that committee Democrats rescinded his scheduled joint appearance with former Vice President Al Gore because, according to him, they don’t want “Gore humiliated” over evidence or lack of evidence about global warming.

You’re probably right. Getting mad at a “day” is silly. Get mad at Al Gore instead.👍

Because there is an agenda behind it. That’s why.
Planting trees & picking up litter are the “warm & fuzzy, feel good” stuff few of us can argue with.
Zero population growth & less fuzzy stuff lurks behind it.
That’s why Christians & conservatives are skeptical about Earth Day.

I am Catholic and have never voted for a democrat in my life and I am not skeptical. I refuse to get worked up over a day that can be used for good because blowhards like Rush, Hannity and O’Reilly tell me too. If everybody is so worried about agenda’s on this day, the best way to deal with it is to make something good out of it. Mocking it is not working.

I have voted for Democrats & am still skeptical.😉

Indeed - it’s amazing what the uncaused causality has laid out before us. With all the suffering and pain in our world, it’s nice to step back and appreciate what we can truly only appreciate. Our understanding will be fleeting and never complete, but the beauty of this planet, the galaxy it exists in, and the universe of phenomena that surrounds us is truly breathtaking. Makes me feel special to be a cog in this great machine.

Wow, you are on a Catholic website flowering up your message with all this atheistic stuff. Are you looking to argue?

Well - I don’t see how anything I said in that comment flies in the face of any religion. I tend to believe that the meaning behind the ‘rhetoric’ is far more important. What in my comment was ‘atheistic’?

Also, what about my post suggests a desire to ‘argue’. I prefer debate and discussion to argument, but if you feel the need, go right ahead.

Or you could ask me about my background and beliefs before making presumptions about my presence here.

Btw - happy earth day - belated.

Or, check out your other posts…and save some time;)

if you care not to respond to my questioning or ask any of your own (assuming whatever you’d like about my nature) then I have other recourse but to put you on my ignore list. If you find my commentary that bothersome that you’d waste bandwidth and database space on a comment such as this, you are invited to do the same.

Put me on your ignore list…Please. I am not going to bite though. Have fun. Last post to you

“only help us all”? That’s the question. As Cracker Mom mentioned, Earth Day is agenda driven, and one of the things such days do is make us not question any further about the agenda presented. Even “better” fluorescent light bulbs are not an unmixed blessing. They contain mercury and cannot be thrown out in the trash, but need to be recycled. If they are thrown out in the trash, as they inevitably will be, landfills become contaminated more so than they would be with regular lightbulbs. It’s not a good idea to accept uncritically every agenda item that is tossed out to us by environmental activists.

Healthy skepticism is good. But let’s analyze the GreenBulbs:

The GreenBulbs DO have mercury in them and are difficult to dispose of. They actually “cannot” be disposed of in a landfill (legally), but they DO last more than 10 times longer. I think if you added the price of properly disposing of the GreenBulb to the price of the GreenBulb, and added to that the price of properly disposing as many normal bulbs as you’d use in that time, the GreenBulb would win. Since societal/resource expenditure is calculated (in our capitalist market) is measured by monetary expenditure, this can only mean the GreenBulb is more efficient and, therefore, better for the environment/country/humanity/*

What’s to say the people speaking out against environmentalism (which in and of itself is a worthy cause - I think it’s the implementation that’s in question) don’t have their own agenda?

But I digress…playing a bit of the devil’s advocate lately.
