Please take a moment to think about the answers to the following earth-shaking questions:

*What is the purpose of life?

Can true happiness be attained without knowledge of life’s purpose?

Does real happiness and /or purpose lie in mere eating and drinking, sex and procreation; a few enjoyable moments, followed by sudden death?

Isn’t it absolutely illogical for God, who is infinitely wise, to create us without a purpose?*

c’mon lets hear it. 😃
  1. to know, love, and serve God. We all tend to think there are other purposes to life, but we’re mistaken.
  2. I think so. I think a person who is mentally challenged can find happiness without understanding that he needs to “know, love, and serve God”. Certain spiritual things are encoded on us just like DNA.
  3. No. There are plenty of examles of people who have LOTS of sex, drink LOTS of alcohol, eat the BEST foods, and have children and are still not happy.
  4. God created each of us with a purpose. Just because we may never figure out what it is doesn’t mean there isn’t one.

Please take a moment to think about the answers to the following earth-shaking questions:

**What is the purpose of life?
**
*Life comes with no ‘Purpose’. We create our own purpose in life. Read Viktor Frankl.
**
*
Can true happiness be attained without knowledge of life’s ‘purpose’?

**Certainly. We create our own happiness, as life has no purpose other than what we bring to it. **

Does real happiness and /or ‘purpose’ lie in mere eating and drinking, sex and procreation; a few enjoyable moments, followed by sudden death?

It can and does for millions, who don’t have enough to eat. Purpose for these consists of eking out an existence day-to-day; happiness is having enough to eat. It’s only after basic needs are fulfilled that one starts worrying about these existential questions. Most of these people don’t know what you’re talking about.

The Buddhists have it best: destroy the ego. Concentrate on the here and now; always be satisfied with what you have; cultivate a sense of humor. All is illusion.

Isn’t it absolutely illogical for God, who is infinitely wise, to create us without a ‘purpose’? No, as a god didn’t create us. We find our own purpose in life.

c’mon lets hear it.
You got it.

i suppose it means being constantly joyful and appreciative of life, and being able to sleep at night. what do you think?
How can you appreciate life if you don’t appreciate the one who gave it to you? And I don’t just mean your parents…

What is the purpose of life?
To know one’s own existence.
Can true happiness be attained without knowledge of life’s purpose?
No; one exists perpetually in a condition of dissatisfaction–what Buddha called anitya.
Does real happiness and /or purpose lie in mere eating and drinking, sex and procreation; a few enjoyable moments, followed by sudden death?
No; it lies in discovering what existence is, and doing everything in one’s power to truly experience it.
Isn’t it absolutely illogical for God, who is infinitely wise, to create us without a purpose?
Well as I said, we do have a purpose–knowing our own existence.

Maybe if you knew any metaphysics you wouldn’t ask such silly questions. Even Heidegger knew the answer to these, and he thought he was an atheist (hint: if you’re primarily concerned with something best described as I AM, you’re no atheist).

What is the purpose of life?
Our Purpose in life is to love and worship God and to exhibit divine love toward our neighbor.
Can true happiness be attained without knowledge of life’s purpose?
I think we should define our terms here. Happiness is fundamentally an external condition and varies depending on the circumstances we find ourselves in. If we have a nice house a good job and a loving spouse then we are happy and if we don’t have those things we’re not. True happiness, or joy is something else entirely and in no way depends on our external circumstances. The martyrs who sang joyously on the way to their deaths are the perfect example. Their external circumstances couldn’t possibly have been any worse but yet their hearts were full of joy and that joy can come only by understanding your purpose and being what God intended you to be.
Does real happiness and /or purpose lie in mere eating and drinking, sex and procreation; a few enjoyable moments, followed by sudden death?
Everything God created was given to us for life so the very act of eating and drinking can be communion with God. So yes all of these things done for a holy purpose can be joyful.
Isn’t it absolutely illogical for God, who is infinitely wise, to create us without a purpose?
I agree.

Yours in Christ
Joe

  1. To know God, Love God, and serve God in this world with all of our hearts, soul, mind, and stregnth so that we may do so in the next and to Love our neighbor as ourselves. There is nothing else asked of us. This is the HIGHER purpose. I could say survival of the genome, but that is base.
  2. Yes, for two reasons. First, ignorance can be bliss. As long as we do not ask the question, we do not worry about the answer. Second, some people have a naturally happy disposition and siimply do not worry about the road. They just enjoy the drive. Even in knowing, you do not gain happiness in and of itself.
  3. If any of you have ever tried to live this life, you will see that it is fleeting and in the long term unfulfilling. Look at the studies of altruistic behavior. The long term satisfaction rates much higher than chasing wine, women, and song. Besides, as the poet said, “the hangovers hurt more than they used to.”
  4. If by purpose you mean quesiton 1, yes I think so. If you mean that each of us have a God given role in life that we must fulfill to be happy, no I do not. We have the ability to choose our lives, to an extent (I can never be a mideval Knight or a Samuri in the court of a 14th century Shogun). I think that God can logically create us with corporate (species) purpose and let us fill in the rest.

“Can true happiness be attained without knowledge of life’s purpose?”

Maybe knowledge of life’s purpose is what makes people UNhappy. Ignorance is bliss. 🙂

“Does real happiness and /or purpose lie in mere eating and drinking, sex and procreation; a few enjoyable moments, followed by sudden death?”

Well, the 4 things you mention are pretty nice, and a sudden death is preferable to a lingering death. So I wouldn’t call these things “mere”.

And who says these moments “few”, anyway. Maybe you don’t eat, drink, or  as often as others. 🙂

Are you unhappy? 😉

What is the purpose of life?
Hi

This is indeed a very important question and the PromisedMessiah 1835-1908 has answered, with reasons from Quran as follows:
Different people, being short-sighted and lacking high resolve, appoint
different purposes for their lives and limit themselves to worldly goals
and ambitions. But the purpose that God Almighty has appointed for
man in His Holy Word is as follows:

I have created men and jinn so that they may know Me and worship
Me (51:57). Thus the true purpose of man’s life is the worship of God,
His understanding and complete devotion to Him.

It is obvious that man is not in a position to appoint the purpose of
his own life, for he does not come into the world of his own accord,
nor will he depart therefrom of his own will. He is a creature and the
One Who created him and invested him with better and higher
faculties than those of all other animals, has also appointed a purpose
for his life. Whether anyone penetrates to it or not, the purpose of
man’s creation without a doubt is the worship and the understanding
of God and complete devotion to Him. At another place God
Almighty has said in the Holy Quran:

The religion which provides true understanding of God and prescribes
His true worship is Islam (3:20). Islam is inherent in man’s nature and
man has been created in accord with Islam. That is the everlasting
faith (30:31). This means that God has desired that man should
devote himself to His worship and obedience and love with all his
faculties. That is why He has bestowed on man all the faculties that
are appropriate for Islam.

These verses have very wide meaning, a part of which we have set
out in the third part of the answer to the first question. Here we wish
to state briefly that the true purpose of the internal and external limbs
and faculties that have been bestowed on man is the understanding of
God and His worship and His love. That is why, despite occupying
himself with diverse projects in this life, man does not find his true
welfare except in God. Having had great wealth, having held high
office, having become a great merchant, having ruled a great kingdom,
having been known as a great philosopher, in the end he departs from
all these involvements with great regret. His heart constantly rebukes
him on his total preoccupation with worldly affairs and his conscience
never approves his cunning and deceit and illicit activities.

An intelligent person can appreciate this problem in this way also, that the
purpose of everything is to be determined by its highest performance
beyond which its faculties cannot operate. For instance, the highest
function of a bullock is ploughing or irrigation or transportation. Its
faculties are not adapted to anything else. Therefore, the purpose of a
bullock’s life are just these three things. It has no power to do anything
else. But when we look into the faculties of man and try to discover
what is their highest reach, we find that he seeks after God, the
Exalted. He desires to become so devoted to God that he should keep
nothing as his own and all that is his should become God’s. He shares
with the other animals his natural urge towards eating, sleeping etc. In
industry some animals are far ahead of him. Indeed the bees extracting
the essence of different types of flowers produce such excellent honey
that man has not yet been able to match them. It is obvious, therefore,
that the highest reach of man’s faculties is to meet God, the Exalted.
Thus the true purpose of his life is that the window of his heart should
open towards God.

What is the purpose of life?
There isn’t any.
Can true happiness be attained without knowledge of life’s purpose?
Absolutely.
Does real happiness and /or purpose lie in mere eating and drinking, sex and procreation; a few enjoyable moments, followed by sudden death?
Could. But I don’t think a selective memory is necessary for happiness.
Isn’t it absolutely illogical for God, who is infinitely wise, to create us without a purpose?
I’ve heard it said that this god created us in its image and likeness, which would imply that it gave us the same purpose as itself. But this god has no purpose. Riddle solved.

How can you appreciate life if you don’t appreciate the one who gave it to you? And I don’t just mean your parents…
Im sure the one who appreciates life would readily appreciate anyone or anything that gave him life. Even an atheist would. Just as soon as that someone or something begins to manifest itself.

Are’nt you yourself a manifestation of the One who gave you Life?

i dont think so. even if i am, then that means appreciating my own self is an indirect way of appreciating my creator.

What is the purpose of life?
To love each other unselfishly.
Can true happiness be attained without knowledge of life’s purpose?
Nope.

Nope.

Nope. (didn’t see that comin’, didja??) 😃 He could have just been doodling. That’s not what I believe, but I don’t think it’s absolutely illogical for a person to believe such a thing, especially when said person is uninformed of the revealed Word of God.

It is…there is a psalm (Ps 139) about that very idea. David talks about how fearfully and wonderfully he is made, and how is leads him to praise God.
