Hi everyone,

Just wondering.
Am I the only one who see’s any significance in the earthquake off the coast of Portugal last Monday (12/02/07). It came hours after the nation voted to relax abortion laws.
Am I just paranoid, or is God telling us something??

Interested to hear your views on this.

Funny timing if you ask me. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility.

The Lord was true when he sent Mary to Fatima to reveal his Secrets.

God Incidence…not coincidence. Now if others in Portugal would consider the connection. After all, God is certainly in charge. I hope no lives were lost!

Initially this earthquake caught my eye and fortunately there was no tsunami. Let me explain.

The Azores islands (and Madera and Canary islands) are emerged summits of a big undersea volcano mountain range.

Theoretically, one of the gravest threats is that an earthquake in this area may topple an undersea volcano and result in a massive tsunami that could even damage parts of North America. For example, long before recorded history a tsunami hit North Carolina and created the Sandhills.

There are frequently earthquakes throughout the world, but each major earthquake in this area of the Azores is a potential catastrophe.

Bottom line: we should thank Mary for her intervention towards keeping our world safe during this earthquake.

If it’s an indication of God’s displeasure (or some such thing) - why did He not do something equally spectacular, or more so, to the Nazis ? He didn’t. Are we to assume that God cares for the unborn, but not for Poles, Jews, Romanies or Slavs ?

Why are there no earthquakes or plagues to inconvenience the Mafia ? Or does God approve of their activities ? Disasters happen through natural causes, such as geological faults, the fact that people live in the path of hurricanes or tornadoes, erosion, lack of knowledge of basic hygiene; or else as results of deforestation, poor engineering, war & other human activities. God is not involved in the directly causal way implied by the question - which is not to deny that somehow or other all these things are within the scope of Divine Providence.

I don’t think it’s possible to read any lesson from such events - they occur, not because of Divine displeasure, but because of geology: in this case the geology of Portugal, which in 1755 was struck by a massive earthquake which killed tens of thousands. In the Tokyo earthquake of 1923, buildings designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright remained standing, not because Wright was outstanding for his piety, but because he was a very good architect - which is why Tokyo asked him to design buildings there in the first place, Tokyo being situated on a fault-line, therefore, needing good architects.

Unless we are suppose that God, foreseeing the abortion vote, moved the Portuguese to construct cities where they did so that when that vote occurred He could send an earthquake that would cause damage but not kill anyone. But that implies that it’s possible to know what events God regards as important - & we do not know what God thinks about such deep matters. There was back-street abortion only in 1755, whereas abortion has now lost much of its stigma & is not as dangerous for the mother as it was - so why kill 10,000s of people in 1755, & none in 2007 ?

I don’t think there is any connection between the vote & the earthquake. (There was no heaven-sent disaster of any kind when the UK liberalised the law in 1966)

Hi Gottle of Geer,

Thanks for your posts. I agree with a lot of what you’ve said.
Of course I’m not suggesting that God would intervene in histroy at every point that displeases Him. What free will would exist??

I also don’t think that car bombings and suicide bombings could be linked to Gods will or theology.

Also, to simply draw a direct connection between every event and God would be very paranoid.

However, I believe that God sometimes give us signs to let us know how How he feels/signs of the times (Matt 24:7).
