Earthquake, Scripture, The End Times (And a Little Bit O' Pat Robertson)

A singular earthquake is not the sign given. [Perhaps those commenting on the signs should be sure to know what the signs are first?] Jesus spoke of earthquakes in relation to birth pangs - the onset of labor pains. Labor pains start out small and almost imperceptible and increase in frequency and intensity.

USGS has earthquake data readily available and you can make your own charts, if you’d like. There are nuances in the article - such as looking at larger earthquakes,and looking at a relatively limited span of time, such as from 2000 until now. The ‘other’ side uses their own nuances, like including all earthquakes, even those we do not feel or can barely measure, and including data from decades - to try to support the argument that earthquakes are not increasing.

Jesus spoke of a confluence of signs, not just one sign. And these signs are converging at the present time. Signs ‘in the cosmos’ include the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima on 10/13/1917 and the halo of the sun at Fatima on May 13, 2011. Apostasy around the world - abortion, contraception, homosexual marriage, homosexual bishops and priests (Episcopalian), cohabitation being the norm, children born out of wedlock seen as aok, pre-marital sex — that reflects the spirit of the age instead of the mind of Christ.

Another supposed indication is “when evil becomes good, and good evil” - we see this now - speaking out against abortion and homosexualality is considered intolerant and “hate speech”, while those who speak out against the Christian lifestyle are not considered to be speaking hatefully (but they are). In various regions, the United Way has cut off funding for the Boy Scouts of America because they do not allow homosexual scout leaders, even though the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Scouts.

Julia, what signs do you believe Jesus referred to when He spoke of the signs of the end?

I created these two graphs using the data provided by USGS website:
earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/graphs.php

These are the number of earthquakes from 1980-2010, one graph for 6-6.9, the other for 7-7.9. The trendline shows an upward trend for both. And while 2011 is not complete, the data to-date for 2011 looks like it will show another significant upward tick on the graph once 2011 completes.

The USGS attributes the upward trend to increases in seismic recording ability. That means the only way I can see to validate an upward trend in earthquakes is to know the detailed data about whether it is new or existing seismic stations recording these earthquakes - a way is needed to use station-data for stations that existed throughout the lifecycle of the graphs; or maybe use only the same set of stations that existed over a shorter interval, say of 10 years (which is what that article did - they cut the interval to the last ten years in an attempt , I think they alluded to, to keep the sensing-station counts fairly constant.)

Anyway, until or unless somebody has info on which quakes hit which stations, and does an analysis on that (which will take a substantial effort I think?) then we are stuck with upward trend lines of quakes vs. upward trendlines of sensing stations.

Note though that as for earthquakes, the shallow 1.7 in Philadelphia (sharply felt for a few blocks - nobody believed it was an earthquake at first since Philadelphia doesn’t get earthquakes that people feel) and the 5.8 in DC are unique in that nobody alive today can recall such an event happening. The Colorado earthquake (5.3 I think ?) shortly before the DC quake was also the largest in Colorado area for 30-40 years, I believe it was reported.

In the last few days we have had a 6.4 in Argentina, a large 6.8 or so in Alaska, and a 7 in Vanatu again.

But besides earthquakes, the other signs are very very important. The Apostasy of this time is very important as an indicator.

Usually, Mr. Robertson blames the natural disaster on the sins of the residents of the area (New Orleans, San Francisco). However, since Virginia Beach (which I think is where he is headquartered) is about the same number of miles away from the epicenter of this earthquake as Washington DC, he couldn’t really do that this time, could he?
