Canadian Evaluates Synod

VATICAN CITY, OCT. 21, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Despite increased popularity in Eucharistic adoration, the West still has a ways to go in rediscovering the sacredness of the liturgy, says the archbishop of Quebec.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet, president of the Synod of Bishops’ commission for writing the final message, made these and other comments in an interview with Inside the Vatican, in which he assessed the synod on the Eucharist.

“My feeling at this point, and we are close to the end, is that the synod has been successful,” he said.

The cardinal said a key to its success has been the presence of the Pope: "His personal interventions have really given a sort of rhythm or a depth to our synod. He has been very attentive, very receptive and respectful, of great cordiality.

“He is a man who has a deep conviction and security in his doctrine, so he can listen very much and very carefully to any other position because he doesn’t fear to be shaken up in his own convictions because he has also the charism of Peter, the gift of the Holy Spirit, to support his brother bishops in the faith.”

Very good post netmil(name removed by moderator).

I find this entire synod confusing. Marc Cardinal Oullet says that we have a long way to go to rediscover the sacredness of the liturgy, yet we keep hearing that the return to the Latin Mass was of no interest to the synod. :hmmm:

My own feeling is that you can’t have sacredness without mystery and the forces behind the Novus Ordo remove mystery. But maybe I am just wrong. :hmmm:

I think it’s possible to have the sacred without the mystery. The key is found in understanding the difference between the sacred and the profane and not trying to mix the two.

The Mass of Paul VI can be every bit as sacred as the Mass of Pius V. The problem is that the approach that the people and the clergy take to the Mass of Paul VI tends to be very casual and this, in turn, leads to a loss of the sacred.

Why is the Eastern Liturgy so sacred? After all, it’s usually in the language of the people (although there are “sacred languages” such as Old Church Slavonic still in use). Could it be that the clergy and the people approach the liturgy as if it were sacred?

Part of the problem has been the effective elimination of the sanctuary. People no longer feel that this is a sacred space set apart. But a big part is education. We need to educate the clergy and the people so that they know (as opposed to understand) that the Liturgy is sacred.
