There is a teaching at a local parish that has me confused and concerned. They teach that the Easter Candle is the symbol of the “male” organ and the Baptismal water the female organ and when untied at the Easter Vigil mass it is like the union between man and woman. All I can say is WHAT@! With our society being so “sexed crazed” this makes me uncomfortable. Does anyone feel the same way?

Oh for crying out loud…I’ve never heard of that, and now I’ll never be able to look at the candle and the font in the same way again.

Whoever is teaching that needs to cut it out.

The Paschal candle is the symbol of Christ is the Light of the World…nothing more and when the candle is dipped into the water at the Easter Vigil mass…words are expressed by the celebrant…those who are baptized into his death will receive eternal life…It is a great part of the sacredness of the blessing of the water and the blessing of the fire when first the candle is lit.
Here’s the words from the Catechism:

1214 This sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize (Greek baptizein) means to “plunge” or “immerse”; the “plunge” into the water symbolizes the catechumen’s burial into Christ’s death, from which he rises up by resurrection with him, as “a new creature.”[6]

1215 This sacrament is also called “the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit,” for it signifies and actually brings about the birth of water and the Spirit without which no one “can enter the kingdom of God.”[7] 1216 “This bath is called enlightenment, because those who receive this [catechetical] instruction are enlightened in their understanding
. . . .”[8] Having received in Baptism the Word, “the true light that enlightens every man,” the person baptized has been “enlightened,” he becomes a “son of light,” indeed, he becomes “light” himself:[9]
Baptism is God’s most beautiful and magnificent gift…We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God’s Lordship.[10]

Whomever is teaching this should be challenged.

This is not a “teaching” of the Church but it certainly is a poignant symbol of the marriage of heaven and earth . . . It is the sort of thing that kept me out of the Catholic Church for decades. Just tooooooo pagan . . .

You are right they should be challenged. I thought the same thing…good grief!!!
Thanks

AAAGH!! A visiting priest taught this in our area once a few years ago…people walked out on him and he wasn’t invited back to finish his Mission the next night. It’s bad enough for Catholics to be taught this, but can you imagine the impression non-Catholics would get of our faith if this was their first exposure to Catholicism? Geesh. What in the world gets into some people?

This forum is innocuos and should be closed.
Why’s that? For asking a question about something that was said the forum should be closed? For simply wanting a straightforward response the forum should be closed? For simply questioning something that was of a dubious nature the forum should be closed? What good could possibly come from that?

That would make me raise an eyebrow or three!
