It’s Easter! We celebrate the cross and resurrection because it was the apex of human history. We agree that the earth-shattering sacrifice on Calvary was the fulfilment of that which was written.

Why is it then that there isn’t unanimous agreement about the date of the crucifixion? Experts differ from approximately AD 27 to AD 36 as to when it happened and followers say it doesn’t matter much anyway. It does matter. It is the center point of prophecy! Entire prophetic systems stand or fall on correct timing as it concerns the chronology of the cross.

So when? Exactly when was it?

I believe the date was 7th April AD 30. My article here. I hope it is helpful to Christians of all backgrounds who are interested in biblical accuracy. 🙂

Saint Hippolytus (AD170-240) wrote that Christ died on Friday, March 25th at the age of 33

Saint Augustine also held to March 25th

As to what year that is hard to determine because there wasn’t anything as a “year” back then. In those days the year was based on the Roman Olympiad. It wasn’t until about AD 550 that the Pope appointed a monk to determine how many years had passed since the birth of Christ. Most scholars believe he was off by 2-4 years thus we may actually be living in the year 2015 or 2017 and so it is very difficult to p(name removed by moderator)oint the year of the first Easter.

With due respect to Saints Hyppolytes and Augustine, they were writing from a position of tradition, not from scientific and historic proof.
The fact is, AD 1 is not the year of Christ’s birth. It was actually 3 B.C. This has been prooven many times by contemporary astronomers who were able to track back the Star of Bethelem’s date of occurance. The difference in dates gooes back to the reconciliation of the Old Julian Calander with the various calanders in use during the time of Christ. Unfortunately, none of the early Saints or Church Fathers had access to either the historic documents or modern astronomy to acertain the actual dates of important religious events. Further error in dates crept in when the Gregorian Calander took the place of the Julian Calander.
The Chronology of the Cross by Christian Gedge listed in one of the above correspondance, is spot on historically. Of course many of you will deny this because it does not agree with what you have been taught in school, and you will react to it emotionaly. However, true history is not based on emotion or tradition. It is based on scientifically proven fact.

hmmm, could be a bit old don’t you think? That would make him 35 or 36 years old at his baptism. See Luke 3:23.

All I know is that St. Dismas’ (the good thief) feast day is celebrated on the 25th of March.
If the crucifixion occurred on the 25th, this would make it 33 years after the Annunciation. Wow, I wonder how the Virgin Mary would have felt.

Nice pics Jordan. But I didnt know Jesus was the same age as his Mum. 😉

Was your response indented for me? Oh, well it says he started at about 30, but I don’t think the Gospels specifically say everything happened within 3 years. I just think 39 is more dramatic. Since living to 40 was considered living a full life, being killed at 39 was a big insult. Plus 7 is God’s favorite number and 33 is the number of plates you have in your spine.

The accuracy to which we can determine Christ’s Crucifixion is plus or minus 4 years. That’s simply the best information available.

Im sure we can do better than that. John is linked to Tiberius 15th year whose reign is pretty solid. Also, Eusebius says the temple was destroyed 40 years after Christs death.

The thing is that the dates, for example A.D. 70, when the temple was distroyed, is dated from Christ’s death, not His birth. But these dates are dependent on when Christ was born.

A. D. is dated from the year when Christ was born, not when He died. We don’t know the date of His birth, from which the dates A.D. 33 and A.D. 70 are derived, any closer than +/- 4 years.

IOW, the starting date of A.D. 1 may be off by +/- 4 years or so.
