Is there some reason you think it wouldn’t?
He might be uncertain because of the unusual circumstances last year when Christmas fell on a Monday last year, and we had to go to Mass twice.

This is good to hear. I plan to attend Vigil and I wasn’t certain it would also count as Mass attendance.

I can see how it might be confusing at first. Of course the Easter Vigil is actually the first of the Easter Masses, not a “Holy Saturday Mass.”

Granted, the Easter Vigil and an Easter morning Mass will typically have a different character and there is much to be said for attending both. But that need not happen in the same liturgical year.

We have had questions on this forum about whether the Saturday evening Mass satisfies the Sunday obligation. It has been about fifty years, but word can spread slowly.

The other posters have clarified it for you already, but I’ll admit I’m curious where the misunderstanding came from as my mother seemed to think the same thing until I showed her a pamphlet that said the Vigil counts,

Was there actually a requirement? I thought that when a Holy Day of Obligation fell on Saturday or Monday that the requirement to attend Mass on the specific day was lifted.

In the US that’s generally true. The exceptions are the two holy days that fall in December. Both the Immaculate Conception and Christmas retain their obligations to attend Mass even if they fall on Saturday or Monday.

Did not know that. Thank you for future reference.

But January 1st is transferred, right?

Right. If January 1 falls on a Saturday or Monday the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated in the US.
