Did anyone else make their first Communion last night at the Easter Vigil and receive on the tongue? How did it go?

I was received into the Church, Confirmed, and received my First Communion which I received on the tongue from the priest. Lots of people at my parish receive on the tongue, including all of the altar servers, and we do use communion patens. But I almost dropped it anyway! I kind of fumbled around with my tongue and successfully got it into my mouth. The deacon was standing there watching and kind of laughed. It went much better today, and it was amazing just to receive Him!

How did it go for you?

Yes, I did. It went well, actually. I had no problems whatsoever. Welcome to the Church! And, Happy Easter!

Yep, COTT for my communion and it was wonderful! I wish Mass were being offered today, but I understand the need for a day off. :o

I also received on the tongue at the Vigil and on Easter morning. I think it’s unfortunate that Communion in the hand was presented to us in RCIA as the norm and Communion on the tongue as the exception! I respect the allowance to receive reverently in the hand, but reception on the tongue is clearly the universal norm and should not be taught as an afterthought.

Anyway, there were no problems. 🙂

There was no presentation of one or the other as the norm at my parish. When we did our 5 min. run-through, the deacon just said “If you are receiving in the hand…” and “If you are receiving on the tongue…” and then explained how to do each. 🙂

Thanks, same to you! This morning I went to an Extraordinary Form Mass and received on the tongue while kneeling. I actually found it much easier (not to mention more reverent) than doing it while standing.

Our priest also simply told us how to receive on the tongue or in the hand, and said it was our choice. Our RCIA coordinator receives on the tongue, but didn’t pressure us either way.

You’re welcome. Thank you. The closest that I have gotten to attending the Extraordinary Form of the Mass is the Ordinary Form in Latin with Gregorian Chant. It’s a slow process, but many churches are renovating their sanctuaries to incorporate the Communion Rail once again. Thus, perhaps in the future when can receive on the tongue, kneeling. In the mean time, I make a reverent bow in front of the altar and receive COTT at my local parish.

Regarding the method of receiving, in my RCIA both forms were presented as suitable during the Mass of the Faithful.

I also received on the tongue. Aside from being fairly wobbly-kneed, 😛 no problem.

I did the same twice on Easter (I read the first reading at the 9:30 Mass at this same parish, then went to the 11:30 a.m. Mass at the cathedral across town). Same also this a.m. at daily Mass.

We were told by the priest in RCIA that CITH was the normal accepted form. He never mentioned COTT as an option, nor did he teach how to do it (I asked a friend).

All that aside, what still has me absolutely awestruck is the fact that the Lord lets us…no, wants us…no, **commands **us to receive His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in Holy Communion. (that’s why the wobbly knees!)

Bravo!
And some words of encouragement:
Remember our Lord`s words: “Unless you become like little children…”.
Very young children have to be fed by their parents or an older brother or sister.
By receiveng on the tongue, we humbly acknowledge our “littleness” while our Lord, our eldest Brother, hand feeds us His very Self.
Viva COTT! And Communion rails!
