Easter vigil Mass and the Mass on Easter

This is the one part of the RCIA process that I have been dreading. In all of the years of being a Methodist, I never attended Easter services. I’m terribly allergic to just about every flower they put in a church around that time, most especially Easter lillies. Eyes swell up, asthma kicks in, it gets ugly.

Would it be improper to take a cocktail of antihistamines beforehand with the likelihood that I will be barely functional for the ceremony of bringing converts, such as myself, into the Church?
 
Of course you can! As one who was initiated into the Church on Easter Vigil, may I offer some advice? Eat plenty and avoid benadryl. The service is four hours long and will likely begin at 8 PM. Dress nicely, but comfortably, and if you’re a girl, be careful about heels.

Not at all.

Welcome to the highly allergic to lilies club. I am a member. I dose up on allergy meds also.
 
no it wouldn’t

if you have a serious medical issue w/ spring flowers i’d’ve not seen how missing Easter Mass would be any sort of A SIN AT ALL…
 
I don’t think that is what this is about.This is a catechumen/candidate being received into the Church on Easter Vigil. The OP can’t just miss his/her own initiation.
 
Kill it, kill it with fire. Apply Chlorine Trifluoride (N-Stoff) as needed to the remains to ensure complete destruction of the target. Then salt the earth from which the foul things issue forth.

Uff da: four (4) hours. Yikes… Good thing Lent will be over at that point, and I can grab lots of shots of espresso prior to the event. (one of the things I gave up for Lent was coffee, of which I used to drink 12+ cups/day).

Benadryl is my go-to for really, really nasty allergies. But, it doesn’t last for four (4) hours for me. Wonder if they make it in a time-release one.

As a guy, heels aren’t an issue 🙂
 
you make a good point; perhaps the initiation could be rescheduled…
 
easter is april 1; we are expecting 18 inches of snow here tomorrow

are there even going to be spring flowers by 4/1 ?

i guess flowers grown in hothouses (maybe)

Been there, done that with the snow thing. We didn’t get the max that they were predicting. Still enough to high-center a VW Touareg.
 
i’ve looked at 4 different forecasts; including the “government” weather website

we (in NE US) are getting the hammer job tomorrow

40% of my township still has no power from last friday’s storm…

i was one of the lucky 60%

not so optimistic about this one…

i don’t expect to see flowers poking through the snow piles any time soon…

Ah, I’m out on the prairie of North Dakota. Had minimal power disruptions from this storm that’s headed your way, at least not in the populated areas. I wish you luck. We have an advantage in that things don’t go completely to hell in a hand basket when the power goes out, though business burglaries do go up. Most criminals are a bit nervous of taking on armed house residents, even with the power out.
 
the storm that passed over the midwest is a relatively weak one

the problem is that it is combining with a nor’easter traveling up the east coast of the US

where the two storms combine is ground zero; where i am

not trying to make this a “weather thread”

just trying to tell OP maybe there will be no spring flowers to sneeze at on 4/1 🙂

It is possible to talk to the church about not having certain flowers in the decorations during the Easter vigil. Get in contact with the one doing the decorations. Do mention that you will be received into the full communion with the Catholic Church that night. Give suggestions to flowers that you don’t react as much on and also those that are really bad for your health. Contact a flower shop and ask if you don’t know what the flowers are called and ask for suggestions of less “smelly” flowers. Write them down and give the person the paper.

If the incense is bothering you then I can tell you that there are several kinds, some are more strong in scent and some are weaker. It also depends upon how much the priest puts in the sensor. Talk to the priest now and ask what a good solution could be so that you can be there during the whole vigil without having to leave or be knocked out because of medicines.

I increase the dose on regular asthma medicine a couple of days before events when I know there will be “things in the air” that I react to. I also take the emergency medicine about 10 minutes before they start with the incense and as soon as I smell certain scents from the flowers.

A neighbour of mine was given some beautiful lilies when she left work. She couldn’t have them at home so she gave them to me and I just said that I am going to give them to my mom who I was visiting later that day. The scent was so strong that I had to leave earlier as it was impossible to have them on the balcony with the door and windows closed. Mom had the flowers on her balcony for a little time then they were placed at the very end of the garden but still within sight. Later that evening she phoned me and told me that she had dug a hole in the compost and placed them there. Beautiful, expensive lilies that no one could have around and enjoy.
