I found our that our Vigil this year will be at 7:30 pm, Sunset will be at 7:11. I emailed our pastor after I found out the time and told him I thought it was too early. I am aware that normally they get info from the diocese on what time to start. I thought I learned in the past that the vigil could start no earlier than 45 minutes after sunset? In the past we could start earlier with an early Easter but now since the change in 2007, Easter always come after we spring ahead.

Not to steal one’s thread but it seems to have answered all questions…I had a question about Easter Vigil that the “Ask the Apologist” has yet to answer: The Easter Vigil Mass is the most important Mass of the year and it is the vigil to Sunday’s Mass then must we go to Mass on Sunday? Or does “vigil” in this sense mean something different, i.e. watchful as apposed to being a vigil to Sunday Mass?

Thanks

The Holy Day Obligation (Sunday) is also met by attending Mass on the evening before after the time established by the authority of the Church for the diocese where the Mass is taking place. Sometimes these “Vigil” masses have the same readings, sometimes they have their own specific set of readings like the Easter Vigil and the different Masses of Christmas.
