Is this truly ground breaking? Pope Benedict and Patriarch Bartholomew I celebrating the Mass of the Vespers. Just happened to witness this on EWTN.

  1. it isn’t a mass, nor equivalent.
  2. Vespers can be lead by laymen.
it’s neither groundbreaking nor even terribly powerful.

I believed they recently con-celebrated a bit of Mass together- Patriarch Bartholomew participated in the Liturgy of the Catechumens at a Papal Mass not too far back.

Pope Benedict knows who his real friends are. Unlike most of his liberal Bishops. Pope John Paul II was also very friendly with the Orthodox as well.

Thank you all for your responses. I really need to look into this more. Any recommendations on books or websites?

There was no concelebration, as Patriarch Bartholomew was NOT clothed in Eucharistic vesture, did not participate in the Anaphora, and did not receive communion.

I caught the Patriarch’s address also. It WAS groundbreaking in its irenic tone and message of fellowship.

He referred to Pope Benedict as an elder brother. His elucidation of creation as an icon of God and of icons as teachers of the gospel was brilliant.

His points will be included in the final document of the Synod, thus making his views part of the Catholic Magisterium.

Ya gotta love it.

If I recall correctly the Patriarch had given a short talk after Pope Benedict had preached the homily.
