Eastern baptismal rites

I was recently reading a side-by-side comparisson of the Roman EF and OF baptismal rites, and noticed that in the OF many (if not most) of the exorcisms were taken out of the rite. Does anyone know of any pages where I can consult the rubrics of the various Eastern baptismal rites? I am curious to know if they also have many exorcisms. Thanks in advance.

At one time, the baptism took place in vestibule of the church and the godparents would open the doors and spit outside to cast out the devil. This was done 3 times… I haven’t seen it in a few years, ever since they moved the ceremony to infront of the ikonostas.

It is still done in Europe as far as I know…

The Orthodox Baptismal rite has three exorcisms read over the Catechumen and a fourth prayer before the renunciation and spitting on Satan.

Sometimes only one is read if it’s an infant being baptized.

The Maronites have the exorcism in both their full, more formal form of baptism and chrismation (including the procession around the church) and in their briefer form. I’m certain, because I was stunned to hear an exorcism after never hearing one said in the Roman Catholic ritual!

We just had a Baptism in our Melkite church today, and there was definitely an exorcism done as part of the rite. I don’t recall any spitting, but the priest did breath over the baby, and prayed that any evil spirits leave the child before Baptism.

The Eparchy of St. Josaphat bookstore has a nice version of the restored Order of Initiation in English and Ukrainian, including all of the exorcisms and spitting on the devil. Even the older English translation of Patriarch Josyp’s text had all of the exorcisms, the only thing omitted was spitting on the devil. I’ve never been to a Ukrainian baptism in 20 years where any exorcisms were omitted.
