I have been wondering if Eastern Catholics believe in the idea of Mary as the queen of heaven the way Roman Catholics do. I never hear much about it when reading about Eastern Catholicism. However the Maronite church that I attend often has a large icon of the Theotokos with a crown being placed upon her head. This is what sparked my curiosity about the subject.

I’m not familiar with the finer points on Roman Catholic theology on this point so I can’t say if we believe like the RC’s, but “Queen of Heaven” is one of her titles.

Yes!! Us Eastern Catholics do believe in the Queenship of Mary 🙂

After reading this comment i was thinking to myself, “can there even be more than one view about Mary’s queenship in heaven?”

It would be an interesting discussion if there is more than one view.

Firstly, my original post was directed at both Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, but the post was edited by the moderators to be directed at Eastern Catholics only. But my original question still stands… I guess the reason I was curious about it is because the idea of Mary as “queen of heaven” had always seemed to be to be a Roman thing, it is always our icons that depict Mary wearing a crown upon her head and our prayers refer to her as Queen of heaven, but I never really see Eastern icons of the Theotokos wearing a crown, nor have I heard of Eastern Catholic or Orthodox prayers to Mary referring to her as the Queen of heaven, or anything other than “Theotokos” for that matter, hence my question.

Oh Yes! The Queen-Ship of the Holy Mother is more than accepted in the Syro Malabar Church. The Holy Mother along with St. Thomas and St. Kuriakose are the three most respected and venerated saints in the Syro Malabar Church.

It’s true that “Theotokos” is the preferred title for Mary because after all, “Mother of God” is the greatest title any human being can aspire to, isn’t it? 🙂

However, there are certainly many Eastern icons (both Orthodox and Catholic) depicting Mary as Queen. For example, the Black Madonna of Czestochowa.

Ah, ok. I had never seen them before.
