Eastern Catholic Greetings

Among Eastern Catholic Communities are there any common greetings or gestures done when meeting other members of the Church? The Syro Malabar Catholics when encountering other Syro Malabar Catholics or other Thomas Christians would traditionally say “Eesho Mishiha Sudhi Ayirkettay” which means “May the peace of Jesus the Messiah be upon you” and the other person would reply “Epporum Epporum Sudhi Ayirkettay” which means “Forever may the peace be bestowed upon us”. Traditionally it was accustom when greeting everyone, now it is more used when coming in contact with priests,bishops and other clergy men.

In the Byzantine Churches, we use several greetings. Translations may vary from Church to Church:

Standard greeting - “Christ is among us!” Response “He is and he will be.”
Christmas - “Christ is born!” Response “Glorify Him!”
Pascha - “Christ is Risen!” Response " Indeed he is risen!"

What a beautiful greeting. Its a shame us Catholics, Latin and Eastern don’t greet each other in this way or something similar, the only thing I do when I go visiting someone’s house is " Peace be upon this House". Cannot beat a Biblical Blessing as a Greeting. ::byzsoc:

A typical greeting in the Slav-Byzantine churches, in addition to what babochka wrote above, is “Glory To Jesus Christ!” (Slava Isusu Christu!) and the reply is “Glory (to Him) Forever” (Slava Na Viki).

English is fine but the Slavonic depends on where you live.

I some parts of Slovakia it’s SLAVA VO VIKI, whiile in Ukraine around Uzhorod it’s SLAVA NA VIKI BOHU.
