Thanks for that, malphono.

Agreed. It would be good for the Latin church to rediscover the eastern aspects of Holy Tradition. The Holy Spirit does not necessarily need an eastern pope for that, however.
Does that imply that Holy Spirit necessarly need always western Pope as head of the universal church. I find some slight hint of "western’ superiority in the statement. May be I read it wrong?

But what if in a last hurrah of irony the Eastern Pope used his “universal and immediate jurisdiction” to abrogate Vatican I and decrees that the Western Church be broken into smaller sui iuris Churches? 😉
Bishop Gasser explained at Vatican I that Papal authority:
  1. is not personal: not as the person, but as the role of Supreme Pontiff, not because of the authority of the Supreme Pontiff, but due to the assistance of the Holy Spirit when acting in that role as supreme judge in matters of faith and morals.
  2. is not separate: not apart from, or opposed to, or set over against the entire Church, even though the promise of Christ of the aid of the Holy Spirit to the role of successor of Peter in matters of faith and morals is, in a sense, different than that of the indefectability and infallibility in truth promised to the entire Church.
  3. is not absolute since absolute authority belongs to God alone and it is restricted by the subject: what must be accepted or rejected of faith or morals.
See The Gift of Infallibility, Gasser, O’Connor, pages 44-50. (This is the book on the relatio of Vatican I.)

I did not intend it that way and apologize if that is how it comes across; English is not my first language.

I have no objections whatsoever to an Eastern Catholic being elected to the papacy and see no reason whatsoever to assume the Holy Spirit necessarily needs a western pope; my point was actually that the Spirit blows wherever it will. While I would like to see the Eastern forms of Holy Tradition to be more fully integrated into the whole Church and more appreciated by Latin Catholics (as the Church should be ‘breathing with two lungs’), I do not think this is necessarily dependent on the election of a pope from an eastern church; the Spirit guides the Church into the fullness of Truth, and will do so in inscrutable ways.

I hope this clarifies my previous post.

Just want to point out that we have had Popes from the East, Peter being just one example. 😉 It would be really awesome to see an Eastern Catholic Pope 👍

He doesn’t have the authority to abrogate the infallible and irreformable teachings of any Council.

But seriously, I think we all need to get over the manner of thinking that puts the whole weight of the Catholic Church on the shoulders on the Eastern Catholic Churches.

I’m not having one of my better days, so maybe it’s just me but … huh???

Sorry, I should have taken more time and worded my last post better.

Basically, I mean that we shouldn’t pine for the election of an Eastern Catholic as Pope, or hang our heads if (read: when) it doesn’t happen.

Thanks for the clarification. 🙂 Now it makes sense. And I even agree:  it’s about as likely to happen as the proverbial flying pig (and please disregard Maxwell in that really obnoxious TV ad) and I’m just as happy about that. 😉

Personally, I loved Cardinal Dolan’s response when asked of his chances by NBC News

Basically, he deemed it as likely as taking over A-Rod’s job at third base for the Yankees

Especially if he were to use the authority to declare Vatican I a local synod of thee west.

Seeing as how the Eastern Catholic Churches were represented and even the EO bishops were invited to attend I think he would have a time of trying to explain such a strange notion. 😉
So that’s the recipe for an ecumenical council? I’ll be sure to add it to my cookbook.
